Is this styrefone box a good choice for the bucket where you mix/pasteurize the coir? (I find them < $3 and I figure it will hold warm for many hours.)

That's exactly what I use for my coir, works great, I just rinse it out between uses.

I noticed from your picture the tubs you use. What size are they and what is the avg yield in dry weight? Why do you prefer them to large 66 qt tub?

They are 6qt shoeboxes. I use them because I was struggling getting clean spawn so if I used 7qts of spawn in one monotub and one of those quarts is contaminated I'd lose the whole tub. But if I take 1 quart=1 shoebox and that quart is contaminated I only lose that one shoebox. Im still trying to dial in my shoeboxes since I grow in a closet but typically I get 1/2-1oz on the first flush and another 1/2oz+ on the later flushes per shoebox.

1/2+ that awesome. I did first bulk with 66qt tub, 5 qt of spawn, and only got about 2 oz first flush. Nothing looked awry. I wonder what I might be doing wrong.

You worked with a clone, or ms? With ms it`s quite usual for me to get a weak 1st flush. The 2nd is always better to me. But as an ms grow, they always come uneven, and in between.

The thing is it could be so many possible reasons for low yield: genetics, bacterial, too much moisture, lack of fae, too little moisture, improper lighting, too much misting, etc. Right now I'm tinkering with the amount of water to hydrate coir for my particular situation. I did shoeboxes with really dry coir but a top coat sprayed with water which created an amazing pin set but the growth stopped due to lack of water in the substrate. So now im gonna try wet field capacity coir with top coat. I'm rambling but the point is it really comes down to trial and error for your exact situation so make sure you keep a journal to write what worked and what didn't. Since I've moved to a new apartment the steps that produced great yields are no longer working for me so I'm back to tuning my procedures.

Absolutely.
In the end it`s always your environment.

Are These the shoe boxes you use?

This one was MS to grain. Once the grain is colonized why would it matter if it came from other grain, MS, clone, etc?

Drill a few holes in the bottom and you wont even need to measure water like my Phucket bucket. Anyway around it'll work out just fine.

I do mine in regular 5 gallon buckets so that should work great!

MS has a lot of varied genetics when it grows on grain, agar cuts those variations down to a more similar growing characteristic after cleaning up a few transfers

As you can see ms on agar, you`ll have lots of sectors. I won`t isolate that much now, i want them to rub their shoulders. If i isolate too much, i may get a weak genetic. So i look what i get out and clone from there, let`s say an early pinner, a big guy, whatever. A bit of sectoring, and it will result in better, more even pinsets.
