Banana-Peel Water?
    #26888784 - 08/19/20 04:35 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

My mother has been letting a banana-peel soak in water, and then she uses that water for her various plants with great success.  Apparently, it has made everything in her garden grow better, and it has even rejuvenated dying plants.  My question is: has anyone used/heard of using this technique for misting cakes/shoeboxes/tubs?  Also, do you think that this could potentially hurt or help mycelium?

Potential to help? Doubtful.

Potential to hurt? Definitely.

We're trying to optimize for the growth of a single species when growing mushrooms in tubs/cakes. When you introduce thousands of other bacterial, fungal, and likely viral pathogens to your mycelium or immature fruits (that would be contained in rotting banana peel soak-water), you will weaken your mycelium and botch the grow.

Sounds like a great way to make a cake mold fast.

Potassium is what it gives the plants. Sounds like a bacterial recipe to me for mushrooms.

I didn't immediately think of the obvious potential for introducing contams that this could cause.  (probably because I'm a newb...)

These bloody things are so sensitive that just misting and catching a trich spore will ruin your day. Live and learn fella.

You can sneeze on a fully colonized cake or substrate

What about pasteurized banana leaves?

Something is only pasteurized until you open it and expose it. Pasteurized liquid sprayed onto something is instantly no longer pasteurized
