Living on the moon or mars. * 1
    #26888770 - 08/19/20 04:30 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

If the trip was one way, would you do it? Why or why not?

I'm talking an early primitive moon/mars colony like what might happen in the next hundred years: extremely cramped quarters, few supplies, high likelihood of death. They won't let you take any drugs, but maybe you can hide something small and easily concealable. But smoking drugs is almost certainly out of the question.

At what point of development would it become appealing, like what would a colony have to have in order to appeal to you? Or would you never go under any circumstances, no matter how developed it was?

I would not because I wouldn't want to give up all the awesome stuff earth has. Not just drugs or cities or whatever, but national parks like Zion, or cool places like the small mountain towns of Colorado, or beaches, aquariums, etc.

But on the other hand, if there was a colony on mars that was developed enough that it was more like a city, and you could take day trips outside, maybe... It'd be pretty cool hiking the untouched landscapes of mars, even if you had to do it in a space suit with a ton of oxygen in tow.

I’d choose to live in an orbital over a rock personally but given choice I’d just stay on Terra.

With the radiation meaning you'd have to live most of your life underground, I'd definitely wait until full terraforming had taken place and there was a decent atmosphere including a magentoshield at the L1 Lagrangian point.

There's no food on Mars, or the moon.

For every pound of - anything - you bring up, it takes about a thousand, or ten thousand, pounds of fuel to get it up there.

Its really a bad deal, pretty much, and destructive to life here.

the earch is having trouble with us at present without the issue that Alpha just brought up with fuel and additional resources.  The idea sounds cool, but a lot of the reason it would exist to begin with would probably be because we fucked up the earth so much, and being part of a species that just roams around destroying shit is kinda sad.

There is a very funky problem with a mars colony, that we can hopefully turn into an advantage.

The soil, unexpectedly, is 0.5-1% calcium perchlorate, basically an oxidizer for rocket fuel, which is considerably toxic, so it has to be washed from the soil for the soil being able to support plant life.

That cloud has a silver lining though. Calcium perchlorate would do fine as an oxidizer for rockets, for soil moving blasting operations and has a lot of oxygen it can liberate such as for generation of breathable oxygen.

Calcium chlorate could be used in blasting mining like ammonium nitrate is on earth which is super convenient if you like ti mine construction materials for whole cities.

But martian soil in of itself is toxic because of it. If you filled your drip coffee machine's coffee compartment with martian soil and drank the hot water, you';d get sick.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium_chlorate

Its every pyro's dream to have a fireworks and flash powder component so readily available, but that also opens a door to domestic terrorism on the red planet.

Perchlorate and iron oxide, major components of Mars, are the foundation of whistle mix:

The moon or mars will never have more than industrial outposts. They will be miserable assignments.
