Advice on babysitting first timers on shrooms
    #26886656 - 08/18/20 12:32 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hi everyone,

I'm meeting up with some friends this weekend who want to try shrooms. Male and female friends in their mid 30s, never taken any substances other than cannabis and alcohol before. They're both pretty nervous and although I've got some experience I don't want it to go chaotically wrong (both have some emotional issues and have recently ended very long relationships).

What sort of dosage will give them a decent experience that they will definitely *feel* but not be too overwhelming? For context one reason I'm struggling with this is I'm about a 110lb female who gets visuals more easily than most and tends to come up within 10 minutes, and they're both a heck of a lot bigger than me, the guy probably 200lb.

Appreciate any advice, I want it to be a positive introductory experience but not so weak they get nothing from it!

I highly recommend, if you can get it in print or digital, to check out

The Psychedelic Explorer's Guide

by James Fadiman

A large chunk of that book is dedicated to being a good sitter and what to do in various situations.

In terms of dosage, I recommend between 2.5-3.5g if you have regular cubes of average potency.

My first experience was 3.5g and I'm glad I had such a strong introductory experience. It may not be the right way to start, or maybe it is, but it worked for me.

I'd say use your judgement and see how comfortable they are/you are with being a sitter and go from there.

Wish I could give more but I'm at work and don't have much time to go into better detail

Thanks that's really helpful. I will definitely check that book out as certainly some of this is my own anxiety as a first time sitter

That's good advice, only thing I'll add... Be as comfortable as you can and don't like stare at them with looks of worry on your face lol they might pick up on your nerves.

I remember so vividly a trip where I was with a good friend he was the sitter... I was comming out of a rabbit hole type thing opened my eyes and my friend was just staring at me with such dread and fear (because he wanted to see what it was like before doing it himself).
I found having someone staring at me and asking all sorts of questions to be very uncomfortable, even though I'm very close with him still just wasn't pleasant. I could feel his fear and worrying and was more concerned about him being okay than myself being okay!

For sure. I was toying with the idea of taking a small dose myself so that I'd be on roughly the same plane as them, but haven't decided yet/am going off the idea as they are very nervous. Ordered the book recommended above and will check out the advice. And definitely no staring haha

On my first trip, our "guide" took a full dose with the rest of us (it was a group of us first timers at the time and our "guide" was there to facilitate the experience). I'm glad he took the full dose, he felt on our level. But, at the same time, some people need a completely sober sitter.

So I'd recommend you be completely sober, if you are to be a responsible sitter. If you are to be more of a "guide" and be on the experience with them, I'd recommend taking a full dose. I think this is something you'll need to feel out with them.

Irregardless I suggest taking them into nature a few hours before hand in silent meditation so that they can gather their thoughts. It was one of the techniques my guide used on my first trip and it was incredible. Now, before every trip, I make sure to go into nature.

Thanks for your perspective and for sharing your experience, that's given me a lot to think about actually.

I would always dose at least a small "working" amount when sitting - whether things go well or with difficulty you'll understand it and be able to react more appropriately, the empathy on mushrooms can only ever be a boon if you are experienced enough to hold space for others.

Personally i wouldn't want someone holding space who can't see even a little of what i'm seeing.

Sober sitting only really comes in to play with monumental doses or substances with potential of blacking out/physical harm.

It's only my opinion of course, but you should have fun with them too.

Thank you, yes my instinct would be to do this and I think they would be more comfortable to think I was with them in the experience. A reservation I have is the fact I did something similar to an Ayahuasca experience last month and am still processing stuff that 'came up' so not sure about a big journey on a different substance (but maybe it would be really helpful).

I'll meditate on it

Ah yes that can definitely change things, only you'll really know if it'll help your integration or not, i'm sure you and your friends will be fine whatever you decide, as you come across as someone who knows and respects both the medecine and yourself.

Thank you, I need to have a good think about it. Appreciate all the words of advice and experience. I am certainly very respectful of the power of these medicines which is one reason I am looking forward to introducing some people to it, just need to get the balance right

3 things they should do:

1. Breathe.  Do some deep breathing before ingesting and while you wait for them to kick in.  Also take controlled deep breathes throughout the trip.
2. Surrender.  They cannot resist.  No turning back.  Must let go and surrender to the experience.
3.  Love everything you see.  If you see a demon or snake or whatever, love it.  Say I love you to it.

If they do these 3 things it will reduce the chances of a bad trip tremendously.

I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you report back that it was one of the most amazing evenings of your life.

Three is the perfect number, it would be a waste if you did not dose at the same level as your two friends. And you need to have a full experience, so you need to be thinking of at least 3.5g dry.

You will be amazed the comfort you get from two friends. And when the telepathy kicks in.......

When they start kicking in, go for a walk, for maybe an hour. You’ll then be at the peak. Come home and get comfortable.

Get some great music ready. I recommend full on psychedelic; for that rock feel, Hawkwind, for a more laid back but equally spectacular feel, shpongle, for a bit of a rave, Hallucinogen/Infected Mushroom.

Oh, and Pink Floyd Meddle for the come down.

And bean bags :awesome:

Keep some sticky buds and some good orange juice close by. Trip in nature. Make sure everyone is having fun.

Crikey that's brave advice! The first time I tripped i went for a walk and lasted ten minutes (after eating truffles) until I could barely stand up, luckily managed to make it home haha. My tolerance is about the same, so we will probably stay in ;p

I will follow through on the music advice though 👍
