Has hard work ever actually paid off for you? * 1
    #26887619 - 08/19/20 12:58 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Sometimes it really just seems like it doesn't at all.
The guy that works hard is always getting screwed.

I think the way they did the Coronavirus stimulus is really just a great example of it.

18 year olds that worked some crappy job at some point in the last year over the last few months have been getting that 600$ extra a week.

THAT IS FUCKING BULLSHIT.

Here I am working my ass of when you might as well get on every government program, pop out shithead kids, drink mountain dew and watch game shows all day.

Working hard is important as working smart.

You should always look for ways to get more money.
Maybe it's better to get a job where you earn less but also work less so you have more time for a side hustle, which gives you more money in total.
As an example

The only advice I can give todays youth is to earn what you need by working hard enough to support that!
This old goal of home/wife/kids and save for the future is outdated. We were put on this earth to enjoy life to its fullest... This is a big playground and work is to support the cost of playing !
We are not meant to LIVE TO WORK, its WORK TO LIVE!
I am a child of the 1960s and have learned enough to know that waiting and saving to retire and finally get to play is a fruitless game because by then the best days have past.
The best advice I can give is to NEVER try to "keep up with the Jones'"
Avoid debt at all costs unless the "loan" is returning a profit after paying it back! Cut your living expenses, grow your own vegetables for healthy living and high quality food,GMO
may be appealing but has no taste and is a waste of money! Learn to cook for yourself, restaurants/FF/processed foods may be convenient but is a waste to your wallet/health!
Live simple and enjoy, regardless of what others tell you!
I broke my *ss in the auto industry/trade and made a good living but its never enough, the harder you work, more you make , the more life seems to cost!  It is a winning game for a very small % of the population, so why work yourself into the ground if the return is not worth it? You may live on a beach front but work too often to appreciate it, you may buy a car/boat/toy with the earnings, but if you do not have the time to enjoy it, then that is a pointless purchase!  Work enough to support yourself and enjoy, all else is overkill!
If you have an idea or a goal, by all means go with it. If your job requires all your time/energy, walk away ASAP because your life/pleasure is your priority!

Yes, but it depends on what you're working hard doing. Sometimes I've worked hard with zero reward, other times it has paid off. Even when it didn't, I actually feel like I still got something out of the experience because I often improved my skill in whatever I was doing, even if I didn't get anything directly out of it.

Plus, not working hard is kinda always detrimental even if you get away with it. You end up looking back and wishing you'd done a better job, not for anyone else but just for yourself.

It's hard/impossible to stick to doing your best work all the time, but I do think it does pay off when you do, even if it doesn't directly pay off.

I see truth in everyone's post so far.  Indeed, sometimes you'll fail or simply be unlucky, even when you work quite hard toward a goal.  Other times (and in my experience more often over the longer run), working diligently or "smartly" as PsycDiesel suggested, can definitely produce positive outcomes that you otherwise would not have achieved.  Oftentimes these positive achievements may manifest themselves somewhat unexpectedly, but as you review the course you have taken, you can see where your deliberate actions helped contribute to the reward.

As with many things, there is a good deal of chance involved when it comes to being successful, and each individual's definition of success will be slightly different, but you can certainly increase the chances for your success by staying focused and using your energy in ways that work toward your goals.  It's easy to get frustrated when witnessing others taking advantage of a system in a way that you have not been able to, but getting too caught up in feeling sorry for yourself will only suffocate your own peace of mind.  The world isn't fair in many ways, but I like the way nooneman put it...

Quote:

I also appreciate perikleous' notes regarding the importance of work/life balance.  Part of that involves setting smaller goals that are realistic and achievable, and as you notch each one, no matter how seemingly insignificant is may appear in isolation, it will build your confidence, your self-satisfaction and provide for the mental fuel that will help you achieve larger, longer term goals throughout your life.

Yep, I always work hard and it paid off big time. Not always right away, but I do see that it eventually pays off. When I was starting off making $7 per hour I would work circles around the guys making more than $20 an hour. The boss noticed and gave my consistent raises and sometimes just envelopes of cash. Customers would notice too and want to hire me for side projects and other jobs.

If working hard doesn't pay off for your current job then it is still a good habit for the next one. If you don't get rewarded for hard work then move on to the next one.

Dont worry about the next guy OP - just focus on bettering yourself and being creative and innovative with your work. Maximize your input/output efficiency, meaning work smarter, not harder. But if you need to do both for a while it will eventually put you in a place of success. Focusing on why things are shitty will get you nowhere quick and I am telling you this from personal experience.

Focus on your goals and forget everything else.

For sure.

I think I've always worked really hard, and its yielded me great results.  Looking back, I certainly have had some luck and privileges, but I didn't squander them.

At my job hard workers get punished by picking up the slackers slack, and slackers get rewarded by being given less work to start with. But I've also been told I'm first in line for a promotion so, its a mixed bag.

I worked really hard, working massive amounts of over time and when I was off work I committed some over crime, I did this for 2 years straight, just grinded my brains out till I had 90,000 dollars or so, but only 55,000 or so in legit earned dollars and used that to buy a house. Used the over crime to remodel it and fix it up. Then straightened my life out because I had something I don't want to lose.

Then the home doubled in value after I bought it or damn near doubled.

So yeah, hard work can pay off it just depends on how you go about it.

Work hard, be a decent person, and don't be afraid to walk through doors when they are opened. It's also about who you know, so make sure the right people know you have these qualities. Hard work is not guaranteed success, but cream rises to the top as they say. Sometimes its gradual and sometimes there are black swan moment, if you are consistent then the opportunities are easier to identify and take advantage of.

I work hard, at a salaried job and routinely do 25% more than the people I work with.  This has resulted me in being promoted already in the first 4 months I've worked there(just change jobs) to a position that actually requires less work but more smarts and came with healthy 11% pay boost.  So I would say yes working hard pays off, as does being competent and knowledgeable about what you do.

You tube is great if you are tasked with doing something new that you are not 100% comfortable with, watch a few videos, read about it, make yourself knowledgeable and the competency will come with it.

Short term: Not at all. Working hard is dumb short term. I could half ass my job for a few months, "injure my back" when the projects start piling up close to deadlines, and take medical leave for a few months while my coworkers pick up the slack. I'd basically take the next few months off paid.

Long term: The guy that did that just came back to work today. He's been working that job for years. I picked up the slack when he was out. Got a raise during that time, and was offered a chance to interview for a slightly higher position (of course, it would require me moving to bumfuck nowhere, which I am less enthusiastic about). I've been doing this particular job for...just under a year?

Kryptos, I'm pretty sure we work in adjacent or perhaps the same field.  You know the kiss asses that get promotions and get in over their head then get fired, I a, sure.  Meanwhile, I work hard as hell, learn everything and carry people, and when the inevitable downsize due to project went tits up, or a contractor went someplace else, or an API failed clinical trials, I'm the one who keeps my job, then when things swing around again to hiring time, I get a large promotion cause I carried that fucking place on my back for a year.

I'm a shameless kissass and I jump started my career at the bar with my boss after work.

Basically skipped over entry level lab tech and went directly to running a small analytical lab. Leveraged that into engineering team lead at a much bigger company. Small teams of a few people, and we have about a dozen such teams on site providing support for different manufacturing plants.

Next step in my career ladder would be actually going out to one of those plants, and working there until I became a plant manager, which could take a while. Right now the only plants that have openings are middle of nowhere, Alabama type places. Pre-covid, they had openings in Germany, which is what I'm hoping for. No such thing as "middle of nowhere" with the European transportation system.

I worked in QC in a manufacturing plant (Waters) since I no longer work there.  Far as I can tell the plant manager and plant director do nothing but golf, practice their puts, and give quarterly earnings report prepared by their assistants... sweet job.

Hard work never paid off when I was working for some other asshole.

Owning businesses and having a hobby that generates money is the most fucking work I've ever done in my life. But it is the most rewarding, physically and emotionally. With a 24/7 world comes a 24/7 job..

But, I'll never go back to wages. Not after coming out the other side like this. It's not 1940 or 1950 anymore and the company doesnt give a fuck about getting you a golden spike to shove up your ass. Unless you own a tech company or do some super specialty shit, breaking 200k is hard. Breaking 500k with a solid business is even hard. We are great but still "struggle" in that it takes so much to keep the machine fed. Emotional energy and brainspace shrink.

But yeah the real answer nobody's been saying your whole life is you dont make this kind of money legally and/or working for some other asshole. There is just no success to be had in wages. Shit, I even had an advanced degree and a trade and wanted to die every day.

Fuck punching a clock, and fuck a boss. All of it is a lie and stacked against you. Making money is easy once you have it but tough luck in the meantime. Shit like this is precisely why I'm happy to see so many failed institutions face a reckoning across the country. You got people with 3 jobs unable to rent in the city in which they have to work to live. Meanwhile they're gaslit with all the bootstrap bullshit. No wonder people are depressed.

The people who think you don't even deserve to be beaten with your food want you to believe you're just a wage slave. I broke free and now spend 5k on gold before I get off the shitter. Break free, fuck all these bastards and liars and their rigged game. Hard work does not pay off when you are a wage slave for monsters.
