Black/Blue Spots in Partially Colonized BRF Jars
    #26881222 - 08/15/20 08:34 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

It's been almost a month now, and two of my 5 BRF jars show promising signs of colonization. I do see healthy mycelium in the jar, but towards the top of the jars, near the lids, I notice a black/blue spot in each jar (see below).

Jar 1

Jar 2

I've researched signs of contamination, and it seems black/blue can simply be signs of bruising or pinning. Do you guys think this could be the case given how long it's been since inoculation?

Comments/advice are much appreciated, as always. Thanks in advance.

Get that thing outta your house man! Don't open it, throw it straight in the trash, ideally not in your home. The blue/green spot looks like Trichoderma (green mold) and the black stuff looks like Stachybotrys (you guessed it...black mold). Both can be very harmful if inhaled even a little bit.

In my experience, it's way too early in the colonization process to have bruising from pinning. Also, in vitro bruising is usually not so focused around particular one spot like you have there...it'll be ore spread around the whole jar.

If you inoculated other jars at the same time, I'd keep a close eye on them.

For what it's worth, the wide-mouth half pint jars work a little better for PF cakes. More even colonization and often quicker. Good luck with the rest!

Jar 1 seems to be certainly contaminated.

Jar 2 is suspect. Keep an eye on it for a few days to be sure.

Since the contamination is on top it may not be due to your sterilization process.  It's most likely due to your top protective layer of vermiculite being inadequate. Try leaving a larger area on top when you load your jars with the vermiculite/BRF mixture. An inch of space for your vermiculite protective layer should be more than adequate.

Thank you for the advice. Appreciate it. I've also bought micro pore tape and am consistently using that from here on out as well.
