Just out of curiosity, what do you guys mean by some place being "too liberal"?

What does that mean in a practical sense?

I was thinking stuff like not having a police force because they defunded it, not being able to go to Wendy's because someone firebombed it, not being able to get your drivers license because of a tent commune blockading the entrance and stepping in human poop because they abolished laws to stop homeless people crapping on the sidewalk.

I've not lived there yet though so I don't really know.

Lmao i can assure you that no matter where you go in america and how 'defunded' the police are there, you will be shocked at the level of police presence and activity. Not enough police and cops not taking action will definitely not be problems you'll face here lmao. Will certainly be the opposite.

I want the mountains and the sea, so the PNW has always seemed like a nice place to settle down, but seems expensive.

Oh gosh yes the PNW is amazing. Majestic. It does feel beyond a realistic price range for myself though. Anything remotely close to the Pacific coast feels that way to me actually. I'll have to browse some of listings though just to kinda get a feel and see if there's anything out there that would be realistically within range.

But yes pound for pound when it comes to the beauty of the landscape it's pretty difficult to beat.

Get away from the city centers. I live in the biggest house I've ever rented and pay the least I've ever paid for rent. With an ocean view and can hear waves if the windows are open. It's VERY hard to find housing but if you can find it this is an easy pace to make it as a commoner. My rent is 1400 a month for a 2 bed 2 bath 2 story house with a yard a garage and ocean views from every room. This house in Southern California for instance would fetch easily 4k a month. Food for thought.

You're overthinking this...

There are cops everywhere, and they'll be here for a long time to come.

ONE Wendy's restaurant was destroyed.  There are many more, and other restaurants to enjoy.

Homeless camps will never be blocking any government building, and you'll be able to get your license when you need it.

What else are you worried about?

Massachusetts, North Hampton area.  Winters can suck though and its a progressive/liberal area if that's turn off.  Western Mass in the Berkshires is great if a job isn't a necessity.

Contemplating a move from the UK to the US and first step is figuring out possible locations. Work is not a problem so it's all about a nice place to live.

- definitely prefer temperate climate but would like decent summers
- love forests, hate deserts and long winters
- want to avoid liberal cities full of homeless people or carjackers e.g. LA, Seattle
- also gay so don't want to be stalked by fundie nutters, basically want neighbors who would be happy to say hello and then leave us alone
- don't want city life but don't want isolation or small town vibes either. Suburbs or semi-rural near a small city perhaps?

So far I'm thinking Oregon or North Carolina... am I on the right track... any suggestions?

Oregon is definitely a good choice. I love it here. Beaches, Coast, Forests, Lakes, Rivers, Mountains, Farm Land, it has a little of everything. Also Washington is a cool state too, similar to Oregon but more populated.

If you are gay don't move to the south unless it's next to a big city.  Lots of repressed st8 discreet pound my ass while my wife is at work types.

Most idealistic places have a high cost of living attached and any decent sized city so have homeless and desperate poor people. That's kinda a staple in the US.

I would suggest Oregon, I love Portland as a city and the surrounding area is great, several gay nude beaches and lots of gay culture.

Nobody gives a shit if your gay. You can fuck whoever you want in the privacy of your own home. You might have problems if you expect everyone to bow down to your homosexuality and have special celebrations just for you, if you demand your local school board to have cross dressers teaching first graders, or if you and your friend want to roam the neighborhood looking like the Village People. Most Americans, even conservatives, don’t care what you do as long as you do it behind closed doors.

Yeah, you would do great in anywhere but Portland in Oregon.  North Carolina sounds great.  South Carolina not so much.  Enjoy it.

Shit man, everything is income.

Move to Newport Beach, CA.  Where I would go.
