Mmmmmm.. not really. I mean, to look at perhaps, and the major industries and such. People are much more friendly (and racist to boot). That's where the similarities end though IME.

Honestly bro, the USA is only good for working a high-paying job, or seeking capital heavy investors like if you're starting the next Tesla. Everything else here sucks, and I might eventually leave but this is the only place I can make 400k a year in without owning a company. Besides walking up a stream on the side of a mountain in a national forest and feeling like you're in a jungle, the USA is a major .

I really really agree with this. America is not a good place to live if one values depth and openness of emotion and human closeness and connection. In fact it's the worst place I've ever been for these things.

Amazing place to make money though, if that's your thing. Like nowhere else in that regard.

Portland and the rest of Oregon are like two completely different states. Lots of right-leaning Trump supporters in rural areas. Oregon was originally founded as a white-only state, and that mindset definitely still permeates some areas.

That being said, my vote is for WA state if you're considering Oregon. No state income tax.

I thought Eugene was more up its own ass that Portland.

Perhaps if you live around there, but as a visitor it was much of a muchness.

Northern California is pretty awesome. We have everything you could want within like a 2 hour drive or closer. We have lots of car break-ins, but it's no big deal. As long as you don't leave a backpack visible then you should be fine. There are lots of homeless people too, but a lot of them are cool hippie types. There are mentally ill too, but just don't hang out under the bridges and you'll be fine.

San Diego is really fun too if you like the beach life.

Michigan was cool, except winter. Wouldn't even consider the midwest at all though, unless you like corn farming. NE is cold, rainy, and rude people everywhere. The South East is the worst area and the West is the Best IMO! If I were you then I would take 2 or 3 weeks to drive the West Coast and see where you land.

Northern California is awesome and if it wasn't governed by California's I'd say it would be a fair option. I'll never live in California again personally. Oregon is cool for sure. You can be a yuppie hipster all over the state if that's your thing but it's not all hipster douchebags like people tend to think (nor is it very racist anymore, I've seen substantially more mixed race families here than anywhere in California) . Honestly this country is not that great I'm not sure what motivated you to consider the states but if your set on it look into the high deserts in the southwest. 4 seasons all mild and very slow pace.

Bisbee Arizona
Prescott Arizona
Anywhere rural in New Mexico
Anywhere in Southern Utah (your sexuality may be judged there but even in Salt Lake city and Provo its not ultra mormony like it used to be.

You have to be rich and liberal to move to those states.

I don't think there's anything that satisfies 100% of what OP wants. I know which states I want to move to, but I'm not about to go around advertising them.

I hadn't thought of Northern California, might look into that a bit further. I love everything about San Francisco except for the people. If it's a bit cooler further north and the people are different that could work.

Although I like the climate and forests of the west coast I'm not sure about the mega-thrust earthquake thing. Seems like they're about 50 years behind Japan in alerts and protection.

NC sounds good so far, they also have Biscuitvilles which I've always wanted to visit.

I lived in the south my whole life and any cities like asheville, charelston SC, shit like that, are packed to the brim with young radical liberals, gays, trannies, that type of crowd. They outnumber every over demographic in leaps and bounds. And obv anywhere with a college/university. The general conservative nature of the south should offset it enough that p much anywhere in north carolina should be exactly what you are looking for. Temperate for the most part, winters arent crazy, summers arent crazy, very forested, near some cities but nothing major, not super suburby either, not super rural but still very naturey. Prolly is exactl what youre looking for. Ive never lived in oregon but I hear it's suuuuuper crazy liberal, and it's also unbelievably expensive. But idrk.

Arizona has a lot of high elevation towns that have forested landscapes. Bisbee is a bit more arid but the summers are 85 to 95f whereas the desert floor can reach 120f. Winter in Bisbee is amazing. New Mexico is mostly high elevation and has the southern rockies and landscapes similar to Colorado in many ways but different in many other. The star gazing alone is among some of the best in the country.

Not to say anything, but iirc you came to america only to make money and with a pre-concieved notion that you were not a fan of the country. Not exactly at a great starting point for developing a comfortable life in a new country and getting well acquainted with its citizens... I havent had any problem finding, if anyhting, an uncomfortable abundance of depth and openess of emotion in america. Maybe the problem might be you, and not the whole country? if youre just gonna use our country to line your euro pockets at least dont be an asshole about it.

Sounds good. I had checked out Asheville (on google maps lol) but will have a look at Charelston too. I look forward to visiting when they sort out a vaccine, hopefully by next summer.

Short answer -- no. That would be 100% wrong. I actually kinda thought the same about Arizona before driving through some of it, stunned to see vast forests and even a snow capped peak in the distance looking out my car window.

And I just got back from New Mexico and where I was I may as well have been in Colorado. New Mexico has ski resorts, man. So no lol it's not an extension of death valley

Asheville area would be fantastic for you. College town, but not so far liberal that you'll hate it. Fayetteville is nice, too.

The only downside to North Carolina is everybody drives between 40 and 80 MPH in the left lane. I'd much prefer to drive in West LA than any freeway in NC.

Love Asheville.

My dad's half of the family lives in and around Charlotte and it seems like a super nice, solid area. Prices are so much cheaper compared to up North, but idk if they still reflect that - seems like the area has been coming up and changing a lot so it might not be quite a budgeter's dream anymore.

The heat is miserable, I agree. I hate it. I've spent most of my life in TX and I'm ready to put it behind me and experience a new long term change of scenery. Somewhere mountainous. Like northwest Wyoming, or Colorado, or Montana, or New Mexico...hell even Alaska intrigues me. God the landscape is so epic up there...it's just man, those winters are on another level...

I've spent most of my life in PA and I'm done with it too - PA isn't a hellscape though climate wise, it's really just pretty middle of the road . And it's gonna be tough because my immediate family is all here, and we all live all over eastern PA and it somehow manages to be a very central location for everyone. Probably wouldn't be for a few years but idk. I'm less thrilled about living around people than ever.

I want the mountains and the sea, so the PNW has always seemed like a nice place to settle down, but seems expensive. Hard to pigeon hole myself anywhere though, at this point. For all I know I'll end up finding the perfect property in PA and just getting stuck here forever .

Oh gosh yes the PNW is amazing. Majestic. It does feel beyond a realistic price range for myself though. Anything remotely close to the Pacific coast feels that way to me actually. I'll have to browse some of listings though just to kinda get a feel and see if there's anything out there that would be realistically within range.

But yes pound for pound when it comes to the beauty of the landscape it's pretty difficult to beat.
