Hop extracts?
    #26885893 - 08/17/20 11:34 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

So I just got some distillation equipment and wanted to get some practice with botanical extracts and distillates. I've also got a wealth of hop vatieties including wet hops later this season to play with. Has anyone gone the home made extract route? And pointers or ideas of what fun projects someone's with lab glass and hops can accomplish?

not sure about a small still (you are going to be limited ) , i use a 20lt still on a regular basis for homemade absinthe (among other things like brandy /whiskey etc ).
you can get buy high quality distilates quite cheaply of pretty much anything legal these days , if not 'legal' it easy enough to do a water/alchohol extract to make things like laudanum (tho you could be creating a problem for yourself making things like that )

The idea was more or less getting practice running my distillation apparatus and maybe getting something useful to brew with since much of the hops I have acess to are old stale and oxidized. Ideally I'd like to separate out the alpha and beta acids but I don't see a lot more than just anecdotal write ups about chemical composition.

I would treat it like its nugget and heat or steam is going to destroy all ur delicate terpenes and strip out ton green and bitter tannic flavors

I'll put it this way terpenes are so delicate u lose the best flavors in the beer just from in banging around in a bottle being transported. Heat destroys it all

Hmm I figured I'd loose something in the heating process not everything. I guess the mass produced extracts are all super critical co2 extraction then? I did find this interesting write up about a/b acids and extraction routes. Aside from making a custom bittering addition extract I want to get fairly pure acids from the hops. Also curious about pure polyphenol extract for a stable haze if it's even possible for a kitchen setup. But that's a harder topic to find info about.
