Advice for impending large bulk grow? Am I missing anything?
    #26884678 - 08/17/20 11:21 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hey all,

First time poster here but have been around the forums for a while now.

I'm about to start a large bulk grow and just want to make sure I'm on the right track and that I haven't majorly overlooked anything that will bone me down the road. I've successfully spawned to bulk and fruited in a monotub once before and want to expand the grow by quite a bit.

My materials will include:
12 64qt Sterilite totes, 23qt PC (crossing my fingers for the Presto to restock soon), 30 WM Quart jars, a wire shelving unit to hold all the tubs, 20lb WBS (seems like I'll need more almost immediately), Coco coir, and Glad mini rounds for agar work.

I plan to go MS to agar to grain (WBS) and then start cloning after the first fruits. I plan to experiment with G2G as well. Agar work and inoculation will be done in a SAB. Inoculation and spawning will be done on a rolling basis to spread out the work load/minimize losing everything to contam/not overwhelm the dehydrator.

Is there anything else I should be aware of before starting? Will 30 mason jars be enough for a 1:1 spawn ratio? I'm ready for the amount of work this will likely be and want to be as prepared as possible to stay organized and efficient. Thank you all in advance, appreciate it!

Only thing I’d change really is the ratio of spawn from 1:1 to 1:2 Spawn to sub ratio at least. Idk if 30 will do it but the more the better so long as you have storage space. And I’m also unsure how safe it is buying all these supplies at one time but maybe it’s fine.

And don’t do MS to agar, instead try doing spore print to agar. It’s easier to manage imo. 👍

Soon is now. Right this second.

Hit the presto site before they are gone.

EDIT: and you don't really need wide mouth jars. in fact, some say to use the regular ones because there is a smaller area for contams to sneak in when you are innoculating. you really only need widemouth when you are doing brf cakes and need to remove them from the jars whole.

For 12 tubs, you want to double the amount of jars.

I'd use grain bags...I hate cleaning jars.

Spores > Agar > Quart Jar (or pint jar) Master > Grain Bag > Bulk Sub.

That's the route I'd take.

Ms is the same as print.

If you’re planning on running all the tubs at once you’re going to need more jars and way more seed. Usually that size tub has 5-6 quarts so you’ll need 60 jars minimum and that’s assuming zero contams.

I also agree on more than 1-1 ratio.

Other than that should be good, you’ll have your hands full.

MS is multi spore, not multiple solution.

If you are looking to practice g2g then make a pint per batch of quarts, then you have a tub and a potential second, if your g2g pans out.

I personally recamend if you are going that big pay extra close attention to your spawn and learn when it needs to be tossed. Shoeboxes have instrumental and invaluable for to me learn the differemce between good and bad spawn.

Spawn ratio is personal preference. I've known TCs to regularly do a 5 or 6 to 1 sub to spawn

I never said ms was multi solutions? I know ms is multi spore 👍 Am I wrong to assume when people say ms they mean ms syringe? 🤷‍♂️

And I just prefer prints because there’s not a chance of putting many more spores than necessary. You’re also introducing more water with potential contams into the plate. With syringes I find it easier to overshoot.

If someone’s just beginning agar like I did recently I would recommend prints and swabs rather than spore syringe to agar. You can definitely succeed with ms syringes of course! Just imo as a noob to agar myself, I’d start with prints and swabs.

I always hated working with prints, i fumble around too much with them. it's all opinion.

I just thought it neccesary to clarify. You said don't do ms to agar, use a spore print.... But a spore print to agar is ms to agar

I don't know where you are but my local Rural King had a 23qt and 16qt pressure cookers on the shelf. A lot of them. Don't remember the brand though.

Use a 200qt for your SAB. Upgrade to a FH ASAP for bulk work. Good luck!

Appreciate the input.

And what is the reason for a 1:2 spawn to sub ratio? I thought the closer to 1:1 it was it colonized faster because there's more spawn, or does it not really matter?

I'll definitely look into print to agar but right now I don't have any fruit to take a print off of.

I think grain bags might be too expensive for me at the moment, but I'll definitely consider for the future. Thanks!

Thanks for the input. And any tips for distinguishing b/t good/bad spawn? I think that's a really helpful thought, I'll probably get a few shoeboxes to mess around with.

And does a 5 or 6 to 1 sub to spawn ratio not colonize/fruit slower?

I'm in an urban area unfortunately. A truly bad place to acquire much of the materials for this kind of hobby but here I am lol. I'm wondering where I'm even going to get more WBS. Thanks for looking out though.

Wish my Home Depot had that. Seems like a pain to get online but I'll look around and see what I can do. And I think a FH is still a good year down the road for me lol.

The more spawn per substrate the faster the colonization yes, but mushrooms are 90% water so the more sub the merrier.

There quite a few distinguishing factors. It's something you kinda gotta feel out. When in doubt don't put all your eggs in one basket

Feed stores carry a selection of bulk grain for rock bottom prices. Grains have various attributes. Use them to your advantage. I like oats...
