Breaking up coir the easy way
    #26884761 - 08/17/20 12:07 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

So, yeah, this is probably obvious to most people but it is something that i just discovered yesterday (sometimes i am slow). I had previously searched the forums and had not found this "trick". Hopefully this helps someone new out there who is as retarded as i was ...

(EDIT: the trick was doing this from the side instead of from the top. apparently the coir has a 'grain' so to speak and if you you split it with the grain it is actually realllly easy)

first picture is how i have been trying to do this for the last month. With chisels, butter knives, screwdrivers, hammers, cursing:

Next picture is the easy way my dumb ass finally figured out.  Just use a butter knife.

Im sceptical of this new technology. Seems a bit much for a newbie to learn. Overwhelming.

I like beating coir with a hammer

Neat. To be honest I usually just pour on boiling water and let it do it’s thing but this is a great tip and I will use it! Thanks for sharing

I have actually been making shoeboxes 4 at a time so i could use one brick of 650g coir for all of them and not have to break anything up or have leftovers because i hated trying to break this shit up so much. and i am cheap, so leftovers is a no go for me.

then i opened my latest 3 pack and it was 2 ~450g bricks and one huge ass kilo sized brick so i *had* to break them up.
