What do you do with slow grain jars?
    #26884584 - 08/17/20 10:05 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I have 5 jars planned for a monotub - 3 have been at 100% for like 4 days, 2 are lagging behind. I shook them early at around 15% as this was my only option and the 2 that are behind were behind at that time as well - all seemed to recover fine from shaking though - nothing noticeably wrong with any jars - so:

Would you shake the remaining 2 to speed up the process, and also make sure they recover?

In general - if a couple jars are behind yours others, would you shake them or just wait? I have another set of 5 in similar situation

Here are the colonized sides

Here are the 2 slow ones on the uncolonized sides

Always give information about the inoculation process.

And some pictures of course

Added pics to first post - I will see if I have others

I have 5 jars I inoculated with agar, and then I did another 5 straight from MS syringe just for fun. The pics are of the MS syringe jars. In both cases they seem to be doing OK, but in both cases 2 of the 5 jars are just taking a bit longer. For example the 2 agar jars that are taking longer I think I put smaller pieces of agar in so the others colonized faster

I'm wondering what someone more experienced would do - do you just wait, or shake again etc, don't want to leave the fully colonized ones for too long I guess

It's possible the last two jars has bacteria growing In them.

Are the grain smeared to the side of the jar?

Yeah, there seem to be some clear borders from myc to uncolonized grains.
I'd shake the questionable jars up and wait 2 days for recovering.
If they don't, you know for sure then.
Have some shoeboxes on hand?
Always good for isolating questionable jars.

That's just oats smeared on the jar yes - there is no obvious color contamination that I've seen in any jars.

Here's the 5 agar and the 5 MS jars I have going (these are 2 different varieties just by the way - not sure if the agar is cleaner looking due to agar or just difference in the variety)

MS:

Agar:

On the shoeboxes no, but that is a good point, I guess I could use a shoebox to do a jar separate if it seems fishy

I'll tell you what I would do...

I do all my growing in large myco bags. each bag gets one quart of spawn (300 grams) and 3 quarts of substrate (coir/vermiculite 700 to 900 grams)
Shoe boxes will work.

The jars that are in question I would spoon out the nice colonize grain and dump the bacteria uncolonize grain out into the trash..

That way you'll end up with some product. Also It keeps your good jars separated from the jars In question...

The bags or shoe boxes will go into a bigger tub for climate control during growing..

The syringe ones definitely have the puffy bacterial myc in the first couple jars but they should fruit fine.

The agar ones look better but I don’t like the look of the fourth one. I probably wouldn’t mix that one with the others.

In general when jars are that far along its fastest to wait for them to finish. Letting the others sit won’t hurt anything.

Thanks for the replies - I am thinking I'll still do 3 jars of each set to a tub, and maybe do the other jars in separate shoe boxes. I went ahead and shook the 2 slower MS jars as they are the most questionable to me, so I'll update what happens with them.

Aka - for reference what do you not like about the 4th jar? Here's a couple closer pics

It's a good Idea to learn growing single jars of spawn. It a nice and easy way to test clones and mono cultures etc.

It's hard for me to tell If I'm seeing white specs on your grain.
White specs would be yeast. Sometime It could be just the lighting.

The second jar at the bottom you can see the grain smeared to the glass definitely bacteria when you fully enlarge the image..

Not disagreeing just wanting to see what you see - in person I do not see any white specs on grain - on the 2nd jar I do not see anything in person other than maybe some moisture pressed up on glass on some grains that area, it is clear but is that bacteria or are you seeing something else?

I would have shook those jars days ago. If they recover they will colonize far faster, if they don’t they were likely bacterial.

After the a second look I don't see any white spots.
Your mycelium In both jars look healthy and with time they should grow out.

The second pic at the bottom looks suspect but could be just heavy moisture...

I have always had trouble reading other peoples jars. If the jar Is in front of me In person I would not have any problems..

Your pics are clear and sharp...

So to be safe I shook the 2 slow jars from both groups to make sure they recover, and am going to buy some shoeboxes for them. I spawned the MS 3 qt to a tub today and will see how the 2 agar jars do, as I'd like to spawn all 5 agar to a tub once I make sure the 2 slow ones recover. If something seems off I'll do the slow ones in shoebox too though. Will update with end result
