Moving to the USA - which state? * 1
    #26884442 - 08/17/20 08:37 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Contemplating a move from the UK to the US and first step is figuring out possible locations. Work is not a problem so it's all about a nice place to live.

- definitely prefer temperate climate but would like decent summers
- love forests, hate deserts and long winters
- want to avoid liberal cities full of homeless people or carjackers e.g. LA, Seattle
- also gay so don't want to be stalked by fundie nutters, basically want neighbors who would be happy to say hello and then leave us alone
- don't want city life but don't want isolation or small town vibes either. Suburbs or semi-rural near a small city perhaps?

So far I'm thinking Oregon or North Carolina... am I on the right track... any suggestions?

I lived in London for twenty years and have been living in the states for the past three, having traveled the country extensively before I moved here, so I've some experience.

I'd go for NC myself; the deep south is my favorite part of the country by far. Oregon - whilst being 'progressive' - was too far up its own ass due to the fact, IMO.

What makes you wanna do the move though? There are far better countries in the world to live in; ESPECIALLY if work is not a problem...

If you are gay don't move to the south unless it's next to a big city.  Lots of repressed st8 discreet pound my ass while my wife is at work types.

Most idealistic places have a high cost of living attached and any decent sized city so have homeless and desperate poor people. That's kinda a staple in the US.

I would suggest Oregon, I love Portland as a city and the surrounding area is great, several gay nude beaches and lots of gay culture.

New Mexico!

I just got back from a little vacation there and it was amazing.

Expansive forests, lakes, mountains...the outdoor opportunites were limitless. And the town I was in (Ruidoso) was small (less than 10,000 full-time residents) but lots of tourism so the main part of the town was very vibrant with people, and the crowd from what I saw when I was there was a diverse crowd with lots of folks of all ages.

It does snow in winter because of the elevation but the summers are mild and being that New Mexico is in the southwest the winters I don't think are particularly brutal.

And if you'd like to get to one of the state's bigger cities then Santa Fe, which is a very unique (but also affluent) town with a big arts scene, is a short 3 hour drive from the part of New Mexico I displayed in the photos.

Wherever you decide, best of luck to you!

If you're gay you don't want to be in NC. Maybe Boulder Colorado, Newpaltz NY, or Salem Massachusetts.

North Carolina is a good choice. The people who are saying don't move to NC if you're gay don't live in NC  It's full of the gays.

Asheville area would be fantastic for you. College town, but not so far liberal that you'll hate it. Fayetteville is nice, too.

The only downside to North Carolina is everybody drives between 40 and 80 MPH in the left lane. I'd much prefer to drive in West LA than any freeway in NC.

Yeah but only cause my skin is white. Definitely wouldn't have felt that way were it a much darker shade.

Why your surprise, I'm curious?

These days I think people base claims like that off old reputations for entire states. It's 2020 and now virtually every area/town/city with a significant population has a lot of gay people. I think the only cities/towns that being gay is still terrifying would be rural small towns far away from any population centers.

Oregon is okay, rainy most of the year. Only populated area worth mentioning is Portland, or Eugene. I actually hate winters here and will eventually be leaving.

Honestly bro, the USA is only good for working a high-paying job, or seeking capital heavy investors like if you're starting the next Tesla. Everything else here sucks, and I might eventually leave but this is the only place I can make 400k a year in without owning a company. Besides walking up a stream on the side of a mountain in a national forest and feeling like you're in a jungle, the USA is a major .

Of course this is a subjective statement that it sucks, and I like other people might not.

Conversely I'd probably enjoy walking around the UK (even some boring farm town for a little while), so you will probably find the USA interesting. Problem is the USA is highly undeveloped in certain areas, such as public infrastructure, and very dangerous in specific areas (certain neighborhoods in Chicago, LA, etc). The only way to travel the entire 3k mile width is by a rented car or plane. A train hilariously enough would be as much as a plane, and take over 48 hours to cross the width.

The size is absurd, lol. Obviously I see the extreme of that being in Texas, but depending on which direction I'm going, it can take me 9 hours driving just to get out of Texas

Even when I go to Big Bend National Park, that is in Texas -- I could leave from Dallas and it still takes me like 8 and a half hours to get there...and I'm still in the same state when I reach my destination!!

Word, it would take me over 8 hours to drive from Austin to El Paso.  So it'd be about a 16 hour drive from El Paso to Louisiana.  Ridic..

There might be some states known as "fly over states". Do proceed with caution.

@JSB: I think the heat is miserable for one thing. I don't necessarily despise the south, but it has a lot of negatives for me. Southern culture I guess. I love the coast, and mild winters. On thinking about it more you do love Australia, and aren't some parts of Australia like the southern USA more or less?

The heat is miserable, I agree. I hate it. I've spent most of my life in TX and I'm ready to put it behind me and experience a new long term change of scenery. Somewhere mountainous. Like northwest Wyoming, or Colorado, or Montana, or New Mexico...hell even Alaska intrigues me. God the landscape is so epic up there...it's just man, those winters are on another level...
