A few beginner questions please!
    #26883997 - 08/16/20 09:16 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Firstly, thank you for the wisdom.

1. If I have 7 cakes the size of (1/4 pint, 4 oz), is a 70qt tub ideal for the SGFC for these cakes? Is this too large, too small?

2. Are you supposed to dunk 4 oz cakes for the same time (24 hrs) as 8 oz cakes?

3. Before setting this fruiting chamber, is it best to clean it/sanitize it with alcohol? Or just water?

4. Is it best to bake your vermiculite before rolling? Also, I left the vermiculite unsealed/open air for around 12 hours by accident, is this a big deal?

Thanks folks

I have no judgement dude, that's why I'm asking here. It sounds like you're very opinionated but do not have much confidence in regards to questions 2 and 3. Don't really understand.

Does anyone else know these questions for sure?

Are you following a tek that requires 1/4 pints? I've always seen 1/2 pint jars used for brf cakes. It's a lot simpler if you can just follow a tek and learn from someone who has already figured all of this stuff out. If no one on the boards has any experience with 1/4 pint cakes you'll just have to figure it out for yourself.

dude shall i go fetch every single thread to prove my point. im telling u that we will be more than happy to help u but u dont need 30 fucking threads for the same grow and questions about shit for that grow all your doing by doing that is making it harder on the ppl that actually use the fucking search engine by making a ton of threads that dont need to be there. all u gtta do is have 1 thread man i know for a fact im not the only one to notice this here. i want u to succeed here man but so far your not very good at reading comprehension. as all of this has been covered a million times before and even some of your questions from you have become redundant

oh and 2 and 3 are kinda common sense answers  🤷🏼🤷🏼🤷🏼

He's right about what he says, he's just a dick about it. its a right of passage, dont mind him.
I used 1/4 pint jars my first grow because they were already there and they didnt pan out. they dried out too much. If i were to do it now i would bury them in coir in shoeboxes to keep them from drying out.

first off im not being a dick about it so go fuck yourself for sayin that. did i ever call u a names and right now i kinda feel like it but still not gnna go there as much as id like to.  i never resorted to name calling. its just that there is no need to beat around the bush and prolong these kind of questions that can be easily answered by simply using common sense along with the search engine and putting in 5 min worth of reading. who knows in that 5 min you may even learn something else. god damn you soft fragile ppl with your muh feelings bullshit. im tryin to help you but its frustrating when u dont even wanna help yourself. we see this same shit over and over and over again. this search engine here is awsum you can basicly talk to it and ask it questions and when you dont even try to use it that really shows your character and proves that your absolutely lazy and just basicly want ppl to do it for you without takin the the time to at least try to find the info. hell you can even lie and say i cant seem to find this info but it seems your too lazy to even do that. this isnt about feelings here ppl im a direct and to the point kinda guy. all of my posts are made via my phone mostly while im at work so forgive me if i dont write a 1,000 word gender neutral non micro aggression containing compliment filled reply to something. but i answered his questions with the detail they were warranted. all i asked was to pick a thread and keep it. i dont care if he asks a hundred questions a day in the same thread thats fine but u dont need a new thread for every single question regarding the same grow is all i was getting at.

I feel I could start studying astrophysics, invent a time machine, travel to the year 3657, purchase a book called "Fisher Price's Baby's First Step-by-Step Psilocybin Mushroom Grow and Follow Along" come back here, transpose every image and word and then struggle to get you to understand basic concepts about this shit man.

I think you shoulda picked a different hobby

its not even really a matter of silly questions. its more so a matter of general information that is 9 times out of 10 contained within the tek info its self and if not it sure as shit can be found with little to no effort via the search engine. id say when getting into cultivation 90% of the time put into a first grow is usually research and reading what others have gone thru and experienced and the results they produced. there was nothing mean about my answers not the answers nor the intent behind them. the only frustration expressed is the fact that there is no need for a new thread for every single question regarding the same grow was my basic point

Jcm is right.

Rickomalley - if you followed a tek then you wouldn’t have so many questions as to why it’s going wrong. Follow the tek. What PF tek uses 1/4 pint jars ? None so why are you basing your learning off of an unproven tek ?

its not even the matter of a tc tag or not i can be wrong just like everyone else and i often am thats life. but a lil common sense goes a long long ways also as in life. its hard to help those who dont wish to help themselves. and i agree i often see ppl saying oh that tek sucks and didnt work then u find out they didnt really even follow it and they used it as a guideline for some unproven off the wall grade school level science project. but had they actually followed the tek as written they most likely would have results to show for it. not that 1/4 pints wont work but thats prolly the only jars that were available at the 1 store he prolly went to. cuz if he cant put in the effort to read why would he put in effort to go hunt down the correct supplies needed

A lot can be done with a solid foundation and understanding of mycology. Like jcm said, you can follow a tek and fuck it up because you forgot a detail. The first run I ever did was the mudafucka tek I think? It was brown rice, dog food, oats, wheat bran and some other shit. I wound up fucking up the cooking process, the substrate came out sopping wet and it didn't seem right. I said "fuck it, its what the tek called for" and inoculated with mss syringes bought off a website.

I felt like something wasn't right and kept looking at pictures of colonized jars and was thinking my shit was too wet. I didn't have anymore oats or brown rice (pandemic supermarkets being out of food) but I had popcorn. So I came up with my own recipe based off that other one and inoculated those.

The jars I improvised colonized and the others just sat. Didn't even contam out, just nothing.

The next experiment I did was agaim just my own that I wanted to try off spent brew grains. Those turned out fantastic.

I'm not saykng I'm any better than anyone, but I am saying that a lot of research and understanding helped me with a lot of stupid questions and some hard ones and I just don't think this rick guy is going to be in the same boat ever based off his track record.

well i wish everyone success i really really do and im not even concerned with the questions asked even. im more bothered by the responses givin to the answers that were givin to the questions. i think they were pretty basic questions that deserved basic common sense answers. and if the asker isnt gnna take the time to look it up on his own when its something that can be found in 20 sec by usuing the search engine why should i take my time to give a long drawn out answer but especially when its something like that🤷🏼 i was only concerned with the fact that a new thread need not be started each question about the same grow is all. i and many many others are happy to help someone along and and answer all questions and then as a result that info is better contained for the next guy who may actually take it upon himself to use the search engine and find said information is all.

but just cuz im to the point and direct dont make me a dick. im here to help ppl grow mushrooms and to learn to grow mushrooms and learn about all aspects of cultivation and psychedelics ect. not to powder asses and be your mommy or best buddy but if i make some cool friends here along the way hey all the better and i have met several ppl here who in so many ways have been a positive influence in my life in even more ways than just cultivation. but i also challenge anyone to say that i ever blew them off or ignored a direct question by pm or even in a thread i will always take the time to help someone who asks for help no matter how redundant or basic it may be cuz i was once that guy and im thankful to the ppl who were the exact same way to me cuz it allowed me to learn and to make the effort required and im better off now as a result of it. there is no ill will here man simply just tryin to get ya to put in the effort is all and to keep it in one place so its easier for the next guy

There’s a few people on here that stress out over minor details, of which there are many. It’s kinda fascinating to me I guess because I’m almost the opposite but I can’t imagine going through life with that mindset. And I’m not talking shit at all here, everyone is different.

Just don’t be afraid of failure. It’s gonna happen, you’re gonna learn from it, and you’re gonna do better the next time.

Also keep in mind that cubes grow very easily. Ime it’s pretty hard to not grow them. When I started I thought they were way more delicate than they are, but as time went on and I saw how well busted old dried out subs I left in the corner and forgot about flushed I realized they’re crazy resilient.

Another thing is that there’s a lot of perfectionists on here. When I started out I was positive only a small percentage of my jars would survive because of what I’d read. Truth is it’s important to be clean and careful but even if you mess up or something gets bacteria it’s not a total loss. I had it drilled into my mind that anything not executed perfectly would contam out and fail but that’s not the case. It won’t be as good as a clean grow but it’ll work way more often then you’d think.

That said, I’m not a fan of cakes. I’ve said it a million times but shoeboxes should be the beginners grow. They’re so much more forgiving, at least in my experience. Op you should try shredding a couple cakes into coir in a small Tupperware or something and run it alongside the cakes.

And with a SGFC you want it as full as possible, with the cakes close together to create microclimate. So keep that in mind when you’re picking a size.

Jcm - Please stop blabbering on my thread dude, I appreciate the answers but I'm looking for other input as you're just blabbering, man. If you want to be a mod so much maybe try to apply or ask an admin or something? Just don't poop on my threads please and thanks

myc_hunt - Stop being a dick. It gets you nowhere, it gets me nowhere, and these questions aren't foolish just because you think they are. We get it, you're self-righteous and "holier-than-thou," hence why when I called you out on reddit for your lack of experience you admitted to being a dick, and here you are reforming to old habits. I try to stay courteous with you, but man, you ask for it sometimes bud.

CrashTest - It is not that I didn't follow this tek to a tee, in-fact I did not realize using 1/4 pint jars is not "following the tek," I did do quite a lot of research and others, like RR, said 1/4 pint jars work, so that is what I went with as that is what I had.

A.k.a - Thanks, dude. I'm sure these small detail questions are overthinking, but still I believe it's a viable question to wonder whether to dunk the 1/4 pints for 24 hours or not, and the SGFC size, etc. Still unsure how long to dunk, but I will attempt to figure that out.

Ya, you're not kidding. Maybe add "dick" in there because you seem to dickride anyone against me whether their advice is helpful or not based on a cultivator tag. Not taking anything away from the tag, but that's no better than trusting a cop's law advice because he's a cop, or doing whatever he says to do because he's a cop.

Whatever you say homie.

I dont need to innovate to get mushrooms, I didnt even make an account until after I got my first harvest because I felt there was more to read than to ask or contribute. I just read and looked at pictures.

but for some reason you think you need to reinvent not only the wheel, but gravity itself to get some.

Have fun making new threads everyday instead of just posting in the general cultivation chat where it's supposed to go.

When you hop off others and become innovative, life will open up a plethora of new wisdoms for ya kid.

Have fun following all my posts, I'll be sure to keep witting out the stupendous entertainment of your day.

Sure thing. And thanks for the low rating. Really appreciate it, especially when I gave you help you refused and then get defensive when people tell you that they weren't lying the first time.

There is no reason for you to be so hostile when people legitimately give you good answers. Thats why you get shit on. There's nothing wrong with asking stupid questions, but when you're not taking anyone's answers they get pissed.

And yeah, even though I'm a dick I'm being serious. Get colonized jars first before worrying about fruiting chambers and shit. You already said funds were tight, why are you going to spend more money on something you might not use? These jars could contam out and you won't have anything to put in there and now you're out $5 minimum and if decided to get a fan and other shit, that's even more money not being used.

I really do try to help initially but when you're so fucking hostile, resistant and stubborn it makes me want to jelp you less and see you fail more

Mr. Myc_Hunt, take a real, objective look at things right now. Put your ego aside for a second, as I will do mine.

Your first comment to me on this thread was, and I quote:

Quote:

Myc_Hunt said:
I feel I could start studying astrophysics, invent a time machine, travel to the year 3657, purchase a book called "Fisher Price's Baby's First Step-by-Step Psilocybin Mushroom Grow and Follow Along" come back here, transpose every image and word and then struggle to get you to understand basic concepts about this shit man.

I think you shoulda picked a different hobby

I will not type why I quoted this. In all seriousness, puzzle yourself here. Who was being hostile? Me or you?

Don't dish what you cannot take. That's a good rule of thumb for life in general.

Rick,

I was the first person to tell you to diych UB and get and SAB. Youve done both of those things. Think about it and ask yourself why i would give you the same advice tens of others gave you, which you accepted, if i wasn't trying to help?

This os no fault of yours and its entirely on me but one of my biggest pet peeves is having to repeat myself. And espero so when someone is starting something I enjoy doing, have experience doing and would like to see more successful and ambitious people doing. I'm not an expert, never claimed to be amd preface with as much as I can. I keep my title as Total Amateur for a reason, because idk wtf I'm doing compared to 90% of the daily users herr

You've given me some good advice which I appreciate very much, yes.
But objectively speaking, you've regressed into a dick, probably thinking that I am un-self aware of my naive, nooby questions, and saw an easy chance to dickride and pounce with others like jcm. It really is only you, and him by the way, maybe not the best man to have on your team, if you catch my drift?

Jcm said, very simply: "half size cakes, half time water. duh common sense."

And I think: material density, and a million other factors, which may render this completely untrue.

This is why, going off simple logic and science, I was hesitant to believe jcm because his logic was based off something, er, not so logical.. with all respect to jcm.

Then you pounce with the above quote, rate me a 1, discuss how all my silly posts entertain you, and further.

So, what do you expect? A 5 star rating from me and a slap on the ass? Not quite pal.

You literally said that because 1/4 pint cakes are half the size of 1/2 pint cakes, they need half the time in water.

Right, I understand that you divided the time by two since it's half the size, but do you not understand that water absorption can have innumerable factors other than size. Porosity of material, density of material, and further. Mass might have very little, or nothing, to do with it. This is what I mean by illogical, my friend.

if u have a sponge and u cut it in exactly half will they both hold the same amount of water its the same thing man

if it takes 10 min for something to absorb all the water it can hold then theory dictates that if u cut the size of said object in exactly half it will take 5 min to absorb all the water it can hold. now how do u not understand its really that simple here

Not if, said material, needs 24 hours to absorb water not based on size, but based on material porosity. Get it?

Does anyone know if the surface area of a 1/4 pint is half that of a 1/2 pint? that might make a difference with soak times.

i suppose it doesn't really matter because someone with experience already said 1/4 pints dry out too quickly and aren't really a good idea.

Plenty of posts, including RR, say they work fine. Some even prefer. Yes, I used the search function and searched through nearly every thread related to this; I could not find a concrete answer.

Answer: it doesn’t really matter lol. Just dunk the thing for as long as you feel like dunking it. Anywhere between 8-24 will be good.

The cakes probably soak up all they care to in a few hours and then just hang out waiting to be plucked. And even if they don’t, it doesn’t matter again because cubes be poppin like weeds and will grow great in all kinds of circumstances and conditions.
