I love my mom
    #26883525 - 08/16/20 02:01 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

She gets it. She sent me this today.

There was only one or two visits where I didn't hug my mother during this pandemic nonsense.

Scared at first, we have gone through Covid together.

Well, not together but she lives 1.8 miles away, so frequent visits.

Mask carry bacteria.

Just saying.

Wear one if you want.

Are people really staying home all across North America?

I doubt it.

Peopleare going back to work.

As they should.

Can't forget those protest.

When are they going to start using those refrigerator trucks for all those bodies that aren't really piling up like predicted?

Children are mostly spared.

Have you made it this far down?

Congrats!

You'll probably survive until next year.

Take care of yourself, that includes your meat vehicle.

Ya, my calculator says 2.7%, but that's assuming enough testing is going on.

And then there is false positives, false negatives, and deaths not verified with tests.

My mom has worked accounting for many years. She knows how important it is to be correct with math, or else people come to her pissed about payroll errors.

There's the sidelines thread, @koods thread, HCQ thread, now I have to wear a mask thread, and this one now. Oh, can't forget that sticky thread. The nuclear thread, dengue virus vaccine thread and an eat my chow thread.

She divided total population by deaths... correct epidemiology methodology is total unique positves/deathsx100%=mortality rate.  So your Mom may want to consider a new job.

My mom didn't do that math. I'm assuming it's a picture she saw and shared it with me. It says it's from CDC, care to confirm?

She is retiring from accounting. I think her math is better than yours.

Just got back from another visit with my mom. It was hot today so I waited until it cooled off a bit before going to let my little dog run freely in my moms fenced in back yard.

She has a dog who greeted me with licks on my face as my mom laughed.

It was another good visit.

We have come a long way, her and I. We used to fight and argue a lot.

She's always right, so I'm happy we can agree on some things today.

That's not how statistics work.

I'm sure the exact numbers came from the CDC and some Facebook flat earther did the percentages not knowing how statistics work.

Your chances of dying on Everest are one in four.

But actually your chances of dying on Everest is one in several hundred million because you're unlikely to attempt to climb Everest. Also that stat changes further if instead you're looking at people who summited or people who go on the mountain with no intention of climbing to the very top. And the statistics changes further if you add other variables like your health.

Honestly statistics and social science should be part of core education because half the internet, including apparently scientific articles, and all the way up to scientists seem to use them wrong. And they get away with it because most people don't even know the basics.

So your friend who did this math introduced variables while also leaving out a ton. Like the fact that this is a new virus that isn't remotely close to finished circulating through the population. Normally chances of dying from x means chances of dying from it in your lifetime and I'm sorry to say that 6 months isn't long enough to determine the chances of anything killing people the way we can judge lightening strikes and shark attacks.

(Also the death rate of those tested is closest to your mortality rate and that's high as shit. Thankfully we have alot of reason to believe alot of people who get it don't get tested.)

And, perhaps, a great consolation to you that you get your inheritance early eh.

Working in a hospital unit where every patient had been on Ecmo and had a tracheostomy for at least 10 days. 4/10 under 45 years old.

But hey, at least they are not dead like the 1% mortality.

This is why we let trained professionals make the conclusion about professional topics. If your mom is an accountant, my 10-second-thought-through opinion is not equal to her lifetime of professional experience.

This type of shit is the epitome of Dunning-Kreuger stupidity.

I don't understand how some conflate acting reasonably and accepting that the virus is potentially deadly/harmful with 'fear'. We all know that cars are potentially deadly, and most treat them with respect - but that doesn't mean we live in fear of getting in one does it?

I don't know anyone, personally, who is in fear of COVID, and yet it is the fallback argument of every conspiracy nutter out there who feels they aren't being taken seriously to say 'stop living in fear man!'.

I tell you what gives me fear; the very people who espouse this shit. Those with a crusade and a messiah complex.

IMO, they've retarded out development as a species.

And what scares me, is the people who think they should be able to decide what's best for me better than me.

To compare cars to covid - covid has killed about as many people in the US as car crashes. Should we all stop driving for 3 months?

Where did you see me call "reasonable precautions" living in fear? I'm referring to people who are afraid of doctors posting videos and how the book I linked was banned by Amazon, until Elon Musk intervened. No one had to ask them to carry Mein Kampf, btw, they've always been happy to sell you an English translation of that, so fuck off with your "protecting me from bad thinking" stuff Bezos.

I completely agree. But since when have we - as collective drug users - ever given a fuck about what we're told about that?

I suspect for the most part, as a community, we would all like to be free to take whatever drugs we like. However I don't think many of us are dumb enough to start multiple threads saying that opiods aren't deadly - and the numbers (in regards to the harm they cause) are all made up - and it's all conspiracy to get us to surrender our control, right?

I agree with you on all that. I'm not saying Covid isn't dangerous, because I believe that it is. However, I also believe that evil people have used this as an opportunity.

Why do I need to be protected from a Youtube video, but children don't need to be protected from violent entertainment?

Why is a newly-developed (and therefore less understood) drug that costs almost $3000 being pushed as a treatment, but doctors espousing success with a $100 cure, with drugs that are well understood from decades of use, are being censored and fired? They have been treating patients with this regimen. Where are the deaths and lawsuits for malpractice if the regimen is harmful?

I could go on, but my point is, these are reasonable questions to ask. Asking them doesn't diminish the severity of a Covid-19 infection, but many people react to those questions as if it does. Our inability to discuss each others' views without name calling and extreme reactions is a force multiplier for the virus.

Interesting.  Wish I had a mother like that and would do something like that.

Am estranged from mine but she is Mormon and if one wants to spend a lifetime of that innate need of making mom happy I won't do it.

Will find a lovely wife that will be a great mother and raise a kid to be free.

I use common sense. Yes if I get the virus I will more than likely be fine BUT I really dont care what happens to me. I am concerned about the old lady I walk by when I go out to get food in case I am asymptomatic because that is somebodies grandma.

A bit of respect for others and some common sense.

Goddamn that's refreshing.

Wouldn't it be more responsible to expose yourself to the virus and build up an immunity?

It's my moms birthday this week, Wednesday. I'm going to take my little dog and let her play with mom as a birthday present. She really loves sushi.

That's my dog, Sushi.

Mom turns 65. She loves sushi almost as much as I do.

She goes on about getting close to drawing social security.

No, but you should:

  • wear a Seatbelt
  • drive sober
  • don't drive while sleepy
  • drive at the speed limit
  • put your phone away while driving
  • obey traffic laws
  • keep your car well maintained

These actions won't eliminate the risk of dying in a car crash, but they will help reduce that risk. They will also keep other people on the road safer.

Since COVID-19 is similarly life-threatening, as you've said above, we should take actions that will help reduce that risk:

  • wear a mask, especially when going indoors in a public place
  • wash your hands frequently
  • don't gather in groups larger than ten people
  • keep six feet of distance whenever possible
  • if you feel any of the known COVID-19 symptoms, isolate yourself from others for at least two weeks

These actions won't eliminate the risk of dying from COVID-19, but they will help reduce that risk. They will also keep other people safer.

Nobody is asking you to live in fear. All we are asking is that you take reasonable precautions that will reduce the risk of death. I am not afraid of COVID-19 (I'm really not afraid of death, actually). However, if there's something I can do that will potentially protect other people at minimal inconvenience to myself, I will do it.

Having said all of that, I'd like to flip the tables on you. The problem isn't that people like me are "living in fear". The problem is that people like you are so self-centered that you aren't willing to take reasonable actions at slight inconvenience to yourself that could potentially save another person's life.

This is what concerns me often. I guess such sentiments were not so overtly visible before a pandemic, but I'm fairly shocked by how many humans seem to have such disregard for the welfare of other humans.

I probably shouldn't be surprised, and in a way I'm not, but it's a saddening.

You're providing an excellent example of what I was talking about. I've said from day one, I happily wear a mask in public, because thinking of others is part of being a citizen. I am not required to wear a mask, I am required to wear a mask in order to use public spaces. I'm fine with that, because they're not exclusively my places. They're shared, and when you share something, there's a different standard than when you own it.

But, because I say it is legitimate to ask questions about our response, its effectiveness, and potential treatments, you assume I am engaging in all these other behaviors I have not stated I engage in, and have in other posts explicitly said I do not engage in. I'm talking about my right to hear the viewpoints of qualified medical professionals even if they disagree with the mainstream. To you, that's the same as saying "fuck you and your mask." That's quite a leap.

Because I am not a hive thinker like you are, I must be a hive thinker like they are, is your apparent rationale.

I live 150 miles from the nearest major city. I dont wanna hear that shit. Time is still money.

Are you from the usa? because you obviously have no idea what the fuck you are talking about.

Yeah its easy to get free testing if you live by a major city, otherwise you have small practices that are only for these towns of a couple thousand people.

Why would i pay for insurance? I'm 100% healthy and would waste 1000's of dollars a year.

But, that's not what you're doing at all. You're accusing people who disagree with you that we're "living in fear". What questions did you ask about the response to COVID-19? What questions did you ask about the effectiveness of masks and other precautions? What questions did you ask about potential treatments? I don't see any of that shit in any of your comments on this thread. Other than one question you asked about "a new drug" (which you didn't even name), all I see is you accusing people of living in fear and making ridiculous rhetorical arguments, such as the argument that requiring people to wear masks is basically the same thing as telling everyone not to drive cars for three months (that's a ridiculous comparison, by the way). Then, you get all defensive and start talking like you have a persecution complex (like everyone is coming after you) when anyone disagrees with you or makes a counterargument to one of your claims.

If you have a specific question about the U.S. response to COVID-19, I'm happy to discuss it, and I think other people in this thread probably are, too. If you have a question about the effectiveness of masks (or washing your hands, social distancing, isolating for two weeks, whatever), then I think we can all discuss that question in a civil manner. If you have a specific question about potential treatments, then I'm happy to hear what it is. However, if you're going to accuse me (and others in this thread) of living in fear or trying to force other people to act against their own interests, and then get all defensive when I make a counter-accusation that you're being selfish, then that isn't going to end up being much of a discussion.

Quote:

Srirachi said:

Forgive me for making that assumption, but in my defense, you're not making it very easy (in this thread, at least) for me to believe anything else about you other than the idea that you think masks are ineffective (or, at the very least, questionable) and that you don't think people should be legally obligated to wear one. When you say something like "And what scares me, is the people who think they should be able to decide what's best for me better than me," I interpreted that to mean that you thought that masks (or maybe some other preventative measure) were ineffective and that you think it's scary that other people are allowed to enforce a safety precaution that you don't think is effective. I think that's a pretty reasonable interpretation.

Quote:

Srirachi said:

Let's go back to the car analogy, since it seems to be useful. Let's say that there was an emerging group of non-mainstream doctors who were coming out with studies that suggested that seatbelts were ineffective at preventing death in car accidents. Furthermore, they find that wearing seatbelts can cause undesirable side-effects for some people. Then, let's suppose I make a post on a forum saying "I think it's really scary that people think they can decide that it's best for me to wear a seatbelt when I know better". Would it then be reasonable to assume that I am anti-seatbelt (even if I, myself, wear a seatbelt)? Doesn't really seem like too much of a leap to me.

Quote:

Srirachi said:

That's not a fair representation of my position at all. I don't think you're a hive thinker at all. I'm sure you construct your beliefs from your own unique experiences just like everyone else does. However, I think your accusation that me and other forum users who are in favor of mandated masks are "living in fear" is an unfair characterization, and I stand by what I said earlier when I said that refusing to wear a mask is self-centered. It's perfectly fine to ask questions, but be prepared to have a discussion if you're going to say controversial shit. You can't just say something extremely controversial and then act all surprised when people disagree with you or say that your position is bullshit.

My mom went to care for her sister a few weeks ago. My aunt has developed dementia and was living in bad conditions. My mom went and took care of her. Her house needed to be sold to have funding for healthcare so my mom took care of all the real estate stuff and got my aunts house sold, just today!

It has been very stressful for my mom. She had been fighting with other family members to take notice and care for my aunt but no one would take the initiative. My mom had been buying my aunt food as well as replacing a refrigerator and TV for my aunt.

It's a big relief to have the house sold and my aunt safe with other family members to look after her.

I'm not going to judge you for not replying to everything. It takes a lot of time to read and type stuff out. I still stand by what I said, and I guess you do, too. So, looks like it's a standoff

Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

Happy Birthday mom!

I know you won't see this, but I'll say it anyways.

Love you mom! Have fun with Sushi today!
