Need help ID'ing...
    #26877636 - 08/12/20 10:13 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

earlier this spring I noc'd a bunch of boxelder and lilac logs with Lion's Mane spawn for shits and giggles...mainly just to see how similar of a medium boxelder may be to maple.

Anyways, it's been a hot, dry summer and so I was surprised to see some beautiful white mushrooms growing out the side of one of the boxelder logs. Unfortunately, they weren't Lion's Mane. They look just like agaricus of some sort, but I didn't think agaricus grew out of wood. Gills are pure white and free. Stem is smooth, with no ring. Cap is slightly browned but was nearly as white as stem when [/url]

Compare with Hypsizygus ulmarius. And you are correct that Agaricus will not grow out of wood. Sorry to hear that the lions mane didn't work out

Gills aren't free because they touch the stem , I agree with Hypsizygus ulmarius,  did you start with spawn from a vendor?

likley just got taken over by what was already there esp if was aged for any time. dowels? or just shot it with LC? who knows maybe will still get some . lions main needs humidity if i am not mistaken those fragile gills get zaped pretty quick with heat and dry wind...  never seen a lilac "log" as more of a shrub like habit even on 13 footers.

I have seen a lot of mix ups from vendors,  that's why I asked.

Yes I started with sawdust from what I feel is a fairly reputable vendor...I know the spawn was Lion's Mane because I made a couple blocks with what was leftover and got some nice fruits! I had the same thought though initially because they almost looked like the grey oyster mushrooms at first

This was a lilac that was atleast 100 years old...I got 5 four foot logs that are about 5-6" in diameter...it was completely overgrown and needed the axe a bit anyways...these fruits that seem to be elm oyster apparently are fond of boxelder, which is what most of the logs are, so I'm guessing you're correct in that the elm oyster mycelium was probably already there in the tree when I cut it down.

My yard is full of boxelder trees that are taller than ny house, but i live in a hot, dry place...I bet they're all colonized by the elm oyster myc and just never fruit because of the lack of moisture. I finally gave them a nice, shady spot lol. From the reading I've done it seems that they prefer living boxelder, so I'm guessing this will be the only season I get any of these. Just hope they didn't wipe out the Lion's Mane in the meantime
