Grain Jar beginner
    #26881945 - 08/15/20 04:15 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Grain Jar (vendor)
GT MS syringe (etsy vendor)
inoculated: 8/6
Shook at 50%: 8/13
Bluish grains: 8/14
Lighter blue: 8/15

I am a total noob but I do have micro experience. I know sterile technique and used a laminar flow box during inoculation.

I'm excited because this is my first sign of growth after try 4 different syringes/vendors. The previous jars never grew anything until the 2month mark and it started getting slimey and foul.

Questions:
1. Is the bluish color possible bruising? As it was after shaking and seems to be lessening in color.

2. I'm concerned about standing pockets of moisture on the sides of the jar. Is it contamination?

3. I'm worried I'm just growing a jar of cobweb mold.

4. If the jar is contaminated can I extract grains from the denser/whiter portion to grow on agar and isolate until I have no contams or MS. I need to salvage spores, they are so hard for me to get.

Thank you

It’s extremely bacterial but it might fruit unless that’s mold near the top.

If you have agar you could try putting a grain on a plate and cleaning it up but it’ll prob be tough. You might be best off putting a grain on the plate and then pouring more agar on top of it and waiting for the myc to grow to the surface.

I was worried about that. You do think the denser/white patches are mycelium though right?

It's bacterial myc but you're not gonna be able to salvage anything from it.

So none of it is probably GT mycelium?

So frustrating. I'm using sterile technique and a laminar flow box. I can only think that I'm getting contaminated spore syringes, which I know syringes aren't sterile.

I used that syringe on agar and there was contam but the other 2 syringes had only contam on agar and zero growth of anything in jar.

How do people get started??

Take your syringe and put a single drop on agar. Wait til it germinates. Take transfers from the good mycellium until you have a plate of our myc. But it's better if you can start with a spore print. You can get one from a sponsor or from someone here in the marketplace

Dont waste your time or resources here on these jars ... and DONT put incriminating, and identifying information online: especially associated with criminal activity...

There's myc, mold, bac and prolly some virus up in those jars.

Could something be salvaged from them? Probably. But that's out of your current skill set. And anyone with the skill set to pull it off, wouldnt waste the time.
