Layer or mix spawn results?
    #26881905 - 08/15/20 03:45 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys, what method has worked out better for you for yields and growing - layering your spawn and substrate or completely mixing?

Isn't layering kinda old school?

Both work very well. 99% of this hobby boils down to personal preference.

A long time ago I did two tubs of mixed and two of layered and the mixed tubs colonized and fruited faster. I donโ€™t remember any other particulars but all tubs were just MS and I only tried layering that once.

I remember another method I wanted to try at one point, maybe fahster or Uncle Rico had mentioned it. The idea was to evenly mix most of your spawn and bulk, then leave a top layer of grain on top of that and then cover the grain layer with a final top coat of bulk. For a dense pin set I think. Though you can definitely get dense mixing evenly but it can be cool to mess around

I didnt find much difference at all. I prefer the layering method myself as the last layer acts like a pseudo-casing.

My man RR said if it's grain spawn best to shake the tray around to disperse the grains into the bulk mix.  If you hand mix you can break the grains and invite contams.

Think of mycology like the olympics and all the molds are competing.

You're probably using agar too.  The everyday noob grower is going to need all the help they can get fighting off contams.

You're a trusted cult so obviously you aggressively mix grains in a trusted manner.  I can't trust the first timer handling their grains all professional.

If the spawn is clean and healthy, you can pick your nose and fart on it when you spawn... clean spawn, field capacity coir (2-2.5qts water per 650g brick of coir) please dont perpetuate unnecessary caution/fear at this stage of cultivation... once it's in the tub, its success and failure has long been decided

Love RR. but you should update your source threads to active threads, not archives...

Layering is outdated, along with dark colonization with restricted air exchange, mist and fan, SGFC...

Sorry just saw this:

Laymixing or โ€œsubstrate as casingโ€

Itโ€™s my preferred way for making regular cube subs.. it helps with evening out pin sets and itโ€™s fast ime... I also added about a 1/2 qt of CV to the top grain layer to give the layer a bit more moisture content and it worked well.  Definitely wonโ€™t hurt anything to give it a shot.. not a whole lot different than making a regular mixed tub

You're right about learning new peoples techniques but RR is KING around here.  Staments himself said we don't fully understand the fungal kingdom so until you write up the pick nose fart tek I think some of the old methods still work in present day.

Funny you put it that way: pick your nose and fart is LITERALLY an RR quote... seems you've more reading to do, even in the archives

Atleast someone's reading. I jumped on a reddit group yesterday and someone was asking if they could put dried golden teachers into a syringe and inject it into a cow patty. :smbfacepalm:

I threw around some good links to get them started and then people replied to the comment asking where they can find a manual to get started...

I dont start my cultivation journey until tomorrow therefore I'm in no position to say a God damn thing but, damn...
