Oyster mushrooms gone wrong. Help identifying problem and potential solutions.

Hi all, I hope you are well :smile:

I have had some issues I have not seen before in my small scale commercial oyster grow..

This is what all the clusters look like on 4 out of 6 of my currently flushing blue oyster buckets. I am curious if it is an easily identifiable disease, like verticillium? Or if it is something else entirely. The most identifiable features are the completely deformed fruits and the white spots on them. They never matured much more than the picture and the other 2 buckets looked fantastic.

One other consideration is that all 4 buckets with the issue were supplemented with 25% coffeegrounds as a nitrogen source. The two without coffee grounds are both fine and flushing wonderfully. This is weird, as I have been using the 25% coffee supplementation for several months with no issues like this.

If anyone has any insights, they would be mush appreciated. I am not as experienced as many on here, and value the opportunity to learn. Thank you in advance!

I'm not an expert on contamination id's, but it would seem the evidence is pointing to your addition of coffee.  Using coffee grounds is asking for trouble and 25% is pretty high. 

You can get away with a lot of things, for some time, but that doesn't mean they were a good idea.  I would highly suggest ditching the coffee as your first step, and maybe someone else can help as to what exactly that is.

People grow oysters on 100% spent coffee grounds though, perhaps the difference lies in fresh or spent?

People do a lot of things when they're trying to make "green" businesses look cool.  Unfortunately I think often it's only for the cameras... In practice I don't think it ever lasts long, methods change to something that works better.  Coffee grounds are a magnet for mold spent or not. 

But I can't say it doesn't work, I've never tried it, or grown commercially on any scale for that matter.  I could definitely be wrong. :shrug:

But when all 4 buckets with the issue are the coffee ones, that should tell us something.

Could very well be, I never use coffee but the farm that created that video ran their farm on straight coffee for years. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Hey, thank you very much for the replies. I know that coffee is a difficult sub due to high nitrogen and contamination rates.. Over the past 6 months using coffee I have seen much contamination but never like this. I have found that as long as your oyster mycelium is healthy, you spawn enough, and pastuerize properly, there are very low contamination rates with 25% coffee.

One thing that was different about these buckets was that I experimented with a smaller hole size for FAE. My current theory is that the ones with coffee grounds were more dense, and didnt allow for enough oxygen  . That caused an anaerobic core, which allowed for bacterial or fungal infection of the buckets.. Of course I could be way off, however I am going to start with the simplest solution first. Bigger holes.

I am pretty committed to continuing to use local waste streams, cameras or not, coffee or otherwise 😉

That sounds like a pretty sound theory to me.  Anytime you stifle airflow it can give those unwanted species a better chance.

I started out this hobby using coffee for all my supplementation needs and all it ever caused was problems. Aborted/ stifled fruits and various contams. I never thought soy hulls would be near me and didnt want to buy online cause they upcharge the shit out of them. Called a local feed store and boom, 50lb bags for 12$, goodbye coffee. Havn't had a problem since. Im no pro just yet but Id say ditch the coffee, it wastes time and money 🤷‍♂️.
