Interesting LC from Chia seed

This was kind of cool, I thought. A few weeks back, I tried the needle biopsy technique to make an LC. Just for the heck of it, I added to the 3% light Karo solution, about 1/2 tsp of chia seed. I just added it to the jars, and PCed them as usual.
If you've ever cooked chia, they exude this strange gelatinous material. Something with the consistency of very loose pudding. They float around in the solution looking like translucent little balls.
In any case, added needle biopsies from a couple of my prettiest agar plates. Interestingly, the mycellium seemed to colonize on the little balls of chia gelatin. You can see from the picture, the liquid on top is crystal clear. The little tiny black specks in the bottom are chia seed. I just shot some on agar to test it for bacteria, but so far this looks very healthy. Crystal clear, the parent agar looks good yet...
It's neat. Excited to see if it does anything for colonization rates.

Glad that it worked "in the real world"!

I'm curious about how this works. It seems to me, the cooked chia should hydrate with the 3% sugar solution. But locally--inside the gelatinous little ball around the chia seed, their would be a significant amount of complex carbs, protein, minerals and vitamins. Locally, it should really be a beautiful mix of nutes for the mycellium to feed on. The colonization started slowly--with just 2 of the balls floating to the top. Then, in just a few days, everything went white and sank to the bottom. It looks light and whispy, with crystal clear solution on top.

I knew it really takes just a few cells for things to work--I was just questioning the technique as several times I would scrape a bit of mycellium, transfer to agar, and nothing would happen. I wasn't trying to deny the technique would work. It's just my background is in chemistry. Worse yet--in physical chemistry (not even "real" chemistry :-) ).
It's a cool idea I intend to use a lot more. Needling some fruits, etc.
2 of the jars crapped out, but 3 didn't. They all actually look much clearer after colonization than before. The test results are not in yet, but it looks good visually.
I apologize for any hard feelings. It's a good and interesting technique. I'm going to try some more tomorrow from some pin-clones I started last week.
