Dying is not the aim - but rather - really LIVING whilst I'm still here.
I was not made to work at a desk. I was especially not made to work at a desk in my home and to spend the better part of every day in the same room is said home engaged in work which I care nothing at all for, regardless of how much they pay me to do so.
Perhaps considering this question is little more than a flight of fancy, but a change is coming soon and I will find a way of doing real good in this world, even if it kills me.

I considered being a paramedic because I could help people and not have to study for 8+ years to become a doctor with a specialty, but then studies got in the way and now I'm sick a lot of the time so I can't really give it a shot anymore.
It's demanding and exciting work, that being said a lot of the people there have messed up sleep schedules, which leads to health issues and many develop PTSD, so they're something to consider.

Messed up schedules I like - it's the 9-5 grind that wears me the fuck down.
Surely there's a fuck ton of study required to become a paramedic?

Typically being a paramedic is about 2 years sometimes less in the US. It’s not even a degree, just a certificate. However sometimes it’s an associates or bachelors.
However in Australia, UK and Canada it’s always 4 year degree.

I should add that while I know a paramedic (the highest level of prehospital care) is a 4 year degree in Commonwealth countries, I'm unsure the requirements (or existence) for lower levels of EMS care in Commonwealth counties.
For example, in the US, the minimum of EMS certification starts with an emergency medical responder (EMR) which is only 48 hours of material. While EMRs are rarely used in the US due to the plentiful amounts of EMTs (EMT-Basics), they are sometimes the highest level of care in rural communities.
So, maybe there is something similar that you could learn basic life saving techniques and work in rural communities in some regard.

Jsb there are different levels of paramedic but you can become the most basic level, emt-b in just six months in the states
IMO it doesnt take 4 years to learn to be an effective paramedic. You need the skills to keep people alive until they arrive at a hospital. Compared with other medical professions you dont need learn as much about assessment, diagnosis, medications, or patient teaching. I imagine it can be very rewarding though
I would personally go into er/icu nursing though. Only takes 2 more semesters of schooling and you have a lot more upward mobility/flexibility. Nurse practitioners make around 140k annually here and you have most of the privileges of a general practice MD.

I actually think the commonwealth nations have the right idea by requiring paramedics to have degrees. Because I think like nurses, paramedics will benefit from the critical thinking skills gained during a bachelors degree and that will lead to more professional practice. Because you don't start learning until you get into the field anyway. Also having a degree will lead to higher wages, which will make people want to stay working as a paramedic and will then lead to better patient care.

Ambulance driver doesnt require nearly as much medical training as the actual medic that rides along
Here at least the driver isn't even certified to give shots. Thats why they always come with two ambulances when there needs to be CPR. You get two licensed medics

That’s cool, in the US it’s more common to have a EMT-B as a driver or even another medic before a driver only.
Thats a good option though JSB, driving the ambulance is important and definitely puts your life at risk.

I entered someone's bedsit that was on fire once to get them out when I was a key worker at a homeless hostel. The guy was a client of mine. I remember being outside the door (which was a fire door) and looking at the smoke and wondering if I was going to be engulfed by flames when I opened it.
Worked out ok in the end; when I got in there it was just a simple chip pan fire that I was able to easily put out, but it taught me something about how I handle a crisis haha.
Incidentally the guy was physically fine after but it was actually a self harm or suicide attempt and I'm not too sure what happened to him in the end as I left that job soon after (I was just a student on a short term placement)

Love Team America 👍
And thanks. I was kind of surprised that I'd done it afterwards, I'm not normally known for taking risks.
I guess my thoughts are that these things just crop up unexpectedly sometimes and it's pretty much impossible to know how you'll react until it happens. No idea if I would react the same way if it happened again either so I try not to attach too much pride or ego to it.
