How much vermiculite protective layer for 1/4 pint (4 oz) jars??
    #26878931 - 08/13/20 05:03 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Firstly, thank you all for the help. I tried searching but couldn't find this specific question.

They say about 1/2 inch of vermiculite layer for 1/2 pint (8 oz) jars. I am wondering, since the 4 oz jars are much smaller, there will be less room for nutrients if using a 1/2 inch of vermiculite.

Should you still use the same size protective layer of vermiculite? Or maybe 1/4 inch instead?

Oh, also, do you use micropore tape before pressure cooking or steaming your jars? The video tutorial suggests this, but I wonder then it might be more difficult and contaminate likely to peel the tape off after, or even to try and guess and poke through where the holes are.

All advice appreciated

Same as you would half pint jars, about the bottom of where the lid screws on to just about the brim.

“not much room for nutrients” doesn’t make sense.. Considering the nutrients are embedded in the brown rice flower, the nutrients would be the entirety of the jar just about, despite the protective layer. IMO, if you haven’t already started, you should think about using half pint jars. If you can afford to purchase them it would be the best route. Half pint jars take enough time already to add sub, sterilize and then inoculate. You don’t want to double the work for yourself and get less out of it, name of the game for growing mushrooms is consistency and efficiency as well as executing your procedures in the right manner. Do not take this advice a step further and use pint jars, most of the time, using the BRF method with pint jars, the mycelium doesn’t fully colonize the jar. Half pint jars per the BRF method will suit you perfectly as it has for me and others. Hope this helps a little

It is not a deal breaker. You can use them and have just as good of fruits as if you used half pint. On the bright side, they will probably colonize faster since they are half the size of a half pint jar. You will however, have to spend more time filling the jars with substrate, sterilizing, and inoculating them. Another good note, you will get some practice and experience.
