Active Pluteus? Maine 2020
#26877176 - 08/12/20 04:53 PM (3 years, 6 months ago) |

Growing from beech in Maine, center of the pileus seems to have a blue-steel tint and the stipe has slowly bruised a greenish-grey, consistent with the 2014 description of Pluteus americanus. Other pluteus species growing nearby showed no discoloration on the stipe at all
Opinions are greatly appreciated!

It looks promising, it does appear to have a slight bluing

I definitely agree it's more grey than blue, but the description of Pluteus americanus did say the bruising would be grey. Try zooming in on the gills in the last pic I posted, the bottom-most and top-most bruised sections do have a blue-ish tinge to it

Your find is likely an active Pluteus due to the blue. A more typical specimen striate gills can be see from the top of the cap when they are still moist. Also the dark area/fibrils in the middle of the cap is a trait you are looking for (your specimen has this). Smell it. Get a good memory of the scent. Often times they do not readily show bruising, but the scent will be your clue as you are getting to know them. They smell very dissimilar to lookalike Pluteus.

The smell is VERY strong, noticed it even from several feet away. It smelled sort of like flowers with mushroomy undertones. I wondered why they smelled so strong, most Pluteus barely have a scent at all!

That looks like bluing to me as well. I know that it's not as strong of a bluing like you would see in Psilocybe or Panaeolus but non active Pluteus don't do that

Looks like Americanus i usually find in PA. The bluing is almost always subtle but I've noticed it always blues in the middle on top. Here's one i found last year

 Nice find
