Reusing bags
    #26878031 - 08/13/20 08:09 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, i have not yet grown mushrooms any other way than monotub. At the moment i have lions mane eating through pasteurized wood pellets in a mycobag. Thing is - mycobags are pretty expensive to get in my location.

Would it be possible to, after its done colonizing, to take it out of the bag and put it in a different (regular) bag, then cut the holes into that? This way i would get a few more uses out of the myco bag.

I cant see why this would not work, but wanted to make sure, in case there is something obvious im missing.

You can just be careful not to damage to substrate.

I typically grow mushrooms that i dont have to slit the bag in new bags and reuse bags for a species that i cut the bags.

For example in the new bag ill grow shitmitake, reishi, ect and in the used bag ill grow oysters, lions mane ect.

Best to buy bags in bulk online and be set for awhile.

If I needed to reuse my bags I would find some sort of thick plastic container. Slice the plastic container and just use that. But the bags would have to be really expensive to do that. I pay $0.35 for each bag the work involved to do this is not worth 35 cents or even 50 cents and I can keep going. You have to figure out if the work involved is worth the price of the bag. Remember it is not just filling the container it is cleaning the bags and the container each time.

I get my bags in bulk typically 1000 at a time.

I personally dont take blocks out of one bag and put them in another just was saying that you could because that was the ops question.

I dont need to reuse bags either and dont go out of my way to save bags but if i grow something that doesnt damage the bag ill reuse it. I dont see where the extra work is. I'm going to birth the it or take it out anyway to toss in compost or some woodchips anyways.

I personally dont clean the bags just leave them out to dry.  Never had problems  reusing bags with some residue left in them. Although i mainly only use them for oysters with sterilized sawdust blocks.

If you're only pasteurizing your substrates, you don't need an autoclavable bag, so just use any bag, jug, bucket, or whatever you wanna put a substrate in.

I know that already but thanks.
I should of said that they're supplemented sawdust blocks.

I only use autoclavable bags when I sterilize. I wouldnt waste them for pasturized subs

Wow, thanks, i feel dumb now. But it would still need a filter, right? Would a piece of polyfill tied into the opening of the bag be enough to provide sufficient GE for colonization/fruiting?

One and only reason one would want to sterilize their substrate is if its supplemented, right?

Nah that's a good question actually.  Since you're not supplementing and sterilizing the substrate, you're spawning in open air anyway - so it's not sterile.  So a filter patch is helpful, but really not necessary - your polyfill idea I think would work great

Something like this would make putting the polyfill in much easier...

https://www.homedepot.com/p/2-in-Schedule-40-PVC-Coupling-C429-020/100346899?modalType=drawer

stuff the coupling with polyfill and zip tie it. If you use releasable cable ties you won't have to ever buy more cable ties is what I use to seal my bags they are cheap and can even be pressure cooked.
