whats everyone's thoughts on using additives to your coir substrate for mono tubs. ive only had experience with vermiculite and coco coir. but have read people using coffee and gypsum, even as far as using a nitrogen additive in small amounts. unfortunately ive read alot of contradicting statements and opinions on the great world wide web with no real definitive answer as to if it actually causes more harm then good. some say any additives are a major contamination factor and should be left out other will fight you to the end saying it helps increase mycelial growth and larger pinsets and fruits.
ive alwasy been a keep it simple kind of person and only use race oats in my jars and substrate is coir and vermiculite pasteurized in a cooler for 24hrs. the only out of the norm thing i do is keep my dry oats and dry bricks of coir in a large freezer.

I know that adding coffee is a bad idea. Its the same as throwing extra uncolonized grain in. You’re inviting contaminants.

My opinion is that additives are misinformation left over from the early 2000's. Fungus does not work like plants in that it extracts nutrients from its "soil", rather all the nutes are already in the grains. There's been no conclusive tests done showing that coffee or gypsum at any stage increases yields or performance. Coffee's acidity can also encourage trich.

I’d say no to additives as well. Most anything you add will mean you need to properly pasteurize your sub. That means keeping it between like 140-160 for an hour and then letting it cool off. Too much heat/time will start to kill off beneficial stuff your sub will trich.
If you were stuck doing just a single tub or two it might be worth it to try to figure out what additives may actually help with yield, potency, whatever else. But cubes grown in coir are just so simple it doesn’t really make sense to me. If I want more I just make more tubs.
