is drying mushrooms in the sun harmful to them, such as making them lose potency?

From what I read heat is not good for them.

potency will be lost, but how much is debatable. its better to fan dry 48 hrs then finish off with a dessicant ala damp-rid or drierite.

I think psilocybin isn't very heat sensitive, so you would have to heat it to the point it would start to burn. Psilocin on the other hand is a fairly "frail" chemical and is sensitive to light, heat, and air I believe, don't quote me on that though. I think Psilocin is the chemical that would be breaking down if you left it out in the sun. As for content and how much potency you would be losing though, I'll quote from erowid. Active chemical content of Psilocybe Cubensis is as follows:

.63% Psilocybin
.60% Psilocin
.025% Baeocystin
(Ref - Gartz 1994; Stijve and de Meijer 1993)

So basically, if the light, heat, and air fucked up your psilocin, you would probably have to eat twice as much shrooms to get the same effects.

The reason why fresh mushrooms are usually more potent than dried, is because the air used to dry the shrooms damages the psilocin. If you want to get the most bang for your shroom, eat em straight off the cakes
