Seeking insight
    #26878166 - 08/13/20 09:48 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hello everyone, I am not new to this forum but I have just joined in order to contribute.

Long story short, I ordered grain bags online. 3 weeks now after inoculation... there is no mycelium, there is little whitish-colored specks that are barely visible with the human eye, the grains seem to be dryer than what mycelium studied from youtube and pics from others. The grains also look a little bit darker than they did when first un boxed. I followed a rigid prep and sterilization technique. I know I received good spores from a trusted vendor.

I feel a bit lost right now because I have read that its contams (yeast) and throw it out... I also read it was just hyphae/primordia prematurely growing under conditions that compromise the spores and force them to create these little specks... I figured id come here to get the best insight possible. What should I do? I guess i should probably link these pics if appropriate unless this is something that can be answered easily. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Not an expert but those little white specks look like a yeast contamination to me.

Im not very sure though. It would be what I suspect though.

They look dry as fuck.

The grains always look a lot darker when you cook them.
And what's that "rigid" prep?

Syringes are inherently dirty because of the way they're made, trusted vendor or not. And because of this is never a good idea to be inoculating grains with them, put the spores to agar first.

Btw, I don't see any signs of life in those bags. No yeast, no anything. Just dry grain.

Looks contamed and dry. A bunch of new white spots nowhere near inoculation means nasty.

I closed ventilation of my inoc room hours before. lysol the room heavily hours before. I used iso alc on everything. I truly believe that i got a terrible batch of grain from this vender. I mean, i followed many different teks on how to work in a sterile environment. Most likely was bad grain which led to contams. Threw them all away. How can i ensure ill be alright starting a new batch without that yeast in the air?

Definitely bad grains. I got screwed by a careless vendor for 60 beans...

Spore syringe to grain bag is never a good idea.

You can get lucky with spores to a grain jar sometimes but bags take so much longer to colonize that there’s just too much stacked against you if you nocc with a spore syringe. Without using agar you can be as sterile as possible during inoculation, but your shooting in the dark with the spores so you’ll never know if it’s something you did wrong or the syringe.

And pre sterilized grains are always going to be a gamble.

If you’re going to use a spore syringe is stick to BRF cakes probably. But agar is real simple and not expensive to get into and it will open all the doors and allow you some control over your grow. That and a PC will let you ensure the yeast doesn’t show up again

Its more likely you got screwed by misinformation. As it has been mentioned spores to grains has a low success rate. If you want consistency you work on agar and learn to see healthy mycelium and inoculate with that.

I know it is more convenient to blame the grain vendor but its a lot easier to sterilize grains than to inoculate said grains with a spore syringe.

I didn’t want to get into agar and was intimidated by it,  but now I have so much agar a
I literally just have a bunch in my fridge. It’s easy, seriously.

I do 8G agar (telephone brand,) to 8G light malt extract in about 420mL of water in a Pyrex media bottle (orange top on amazon.)

I just use my grain soak water for agar plates.
Works really well, just add 8-10g agar agar to 500ml of grain water.
I'll never use anything else unless I'm doing a measured low nute plates.
For those I do 8g agar agar and like 2g LMEA.

Youre absolutely right. I wrote off the entire use of agar up to this point because i thought its better off down the road. But I just ordered agar supplies and will stick to your advice. Much easier to control and much less of losing everything this way. One thing i must ask is... why does agar have so many benefits when stacked up against syringe-to-grain? Thank you for the response!!

Because syringes and the spores they're made from are inherently not 100% clean.  Spores do not grow in sterile conditions and while you may get a few successful grows by starting them directly on grain, you'll inevitably end up with more problems going that route than if you were to just clean up the growth in the first place.

My whole thing is that I do not have a PC and I really dont want to get into preparing these things myself, so i pay someone to do it for me. Yeah I understand that this entire community sh**s on anything not DIY... we get allll that.

But I dont mind taking the chance of failure here and there as a price to pay for doing this. I have the finances to cover failed attempts. So I will continue to order pre-sterilized items until I am ready/comfortable to make the jump to complete DIY tek with agar dishes, substrate, sterile grain etc. It seems alot of folks on here are a bit too ethnocentric and not open-minded enough to understand ones desire to cultivate without reinventing the wheel....is buying sterile grain bags really that bad when its coming from trusted sellers who have a positive reputation and testimonies to back up their promise of good products??? I think agar will solve more problems than anything in this case. Thanks for the reply!

You're correct. Which is a fatal mistake I had in not going the agar route immediately. Already have 40 plates on the way!!!!

So I should just stick to doing agar tek and then transfer to these type of grain bags? It appears to be much more promising and yielding than taking the chances I have with this failed experiment

You're inviting failure by avoiding the prep work.  There are constant threads on here from noobs who try to get around sterilizing their own stuff who then wonder why they grew nothing but crap.  It's not that hard to pressure cook something my man- get over the fear and take control of your destiny!

Yes, canning things is easy.  80 year olds do it all the time.
