Attack of the Oysters 2020

Hey all. I just wanted to share some pics with everyone of this excellent oyster boom we've been experiencing in the northeast united states. I've been foraging mushrooms for over 20 years and have never seen anything like it. Interestingly enough, we have an invasive beetle to thank for this bounty. Over the last decade these beetles have all but annihilated the ash tree population of the north. The oysters are taking advantage of all these dead trees. This summer has also been exceptionally dry, up until about a week ago when we had one full day of rain. Almost every dead ash tree has exploded since. You can gather 20 lbs just driving a mile down the road. Anyway, I joined this forum cause I just recently got into cultivation, but I thought the foraging community might enjoy some pics. ๐โ๏ธ
All these pics are diff trees and just a fraction of what I have seen. Nearly every dead ash looks just like these. Pretty awesome!

That is so awesome! I havent seen that many oysters in the wild, even though the conditions are perfect and a lot of people are cultivating them nearby.
I can see the stems are almost non-existent, plenty of small mushies go out of different places on the tree trunk. One thing puzzles me though: Is there like one big mycelium in the tree trunk or is every mushie coming from a separate one? The answer is probably something in between, I suppose.

Could probably be just a single organism knowing that a single mycelial organism could cover entire forest floor.
Nice shrooms. Drying oysters develop more flavor ime..

Yeah I quick dry a few batches, def improves the flavor. Especially with black chanterelles. The best thing about this boom is how late in the year it is. Most of the oyster annihilating insects of spring are diminished now, they are superbly clean. Just need a brush and a frying pan ๐.

Processing.. the worst part..

Iโm also in the north east, and I have been experiencing the same bounty! Itโs been such an incredible year for oysters around here that I had been thinking that perhaps there was a local cultivator to explain the abundance this season but I guess itโs just a good year for them.. Some trees that I found have already had 4 separate flushes! I have been finding mainly golden oysters (Pleurotus citrinopileatus) oddly enough this season though. From your photos it looks like you are mainly finding summer oysters (Pleurotus pulmonarius)? Ive seem a couple of trees that have had both golden and summer oysters on them (One even appears to be alternating flushes between Pleurotus pulmonarius and Pleurotus citrinopileatus) but mainly Ive been collecting goldens close to me. I canโt complainin either way.

Thats awesome!! Yes these are summer. I dont know the scientific name for this variety but Ive called them White Elm Oysters since I was a kid. They are pure white before maturing completely. Unlike the Pearl Oysters that have the gray/ apricot caps that come out in the spring. These white ones are the only other variety of oyster Ive picked around here besides pearl.. and fall oysters but those obv arent out yet. Nice bounty! Enjoy! Awesome pics.
