Good examples of nihilism in film? * 1

About schmidt
Taxi driver
Fight club
Leaving las vegas
Blue velvet
Jacobs ladder?

What are some other good examples?
Or even just some dark/hyper-realistic movies you've really liked?

The Forest perhaps ?

Its that one about the famous Japanese forest where people go to commit suicide.  I can't think of a more nihilistically honest movie off the top of the head.  It may not even be nihilism but I believe there's a chick that goes into the forest searching for her sister where she thinks she's making progress and saving her but in reality kills herself instead just like all the rest.

Haunting!  That was a good film for sure.  I’d also throw in Fear & Loathing into the mix.  Some older documentaries I’ve seen that would easily make the list but I can’t recall the names

The Deer Hunter.

I love the scene at the end of the wedding at the VFW hall, and they see that Green Beret guy at the bar. They ask him what its like in Nam because they're about to ship out.

He gives them the blankest stare, and says "Fuck it".

Nihilism is stupid, it's a philosophy of intellectual laziness and superficiality without any depth or merit.

I agree wholeheartedly, but it’s good to be able to recognize the myriad guises it can take, mostly, so as to learn how to deal with it & avoid falling into its deluded trappings.

Requiem for a Dream
The Man Who Wasn't There, is very nihilistic to me but the critics think another Cohen Brothers movie, A Serious Man, (haven't seen it) is even more so.

No.
It has nothing to do with intellectual laziness or superficiality. I would say the opposite.
French Existentialism embodied by Sartre and Camus is almost synonymous with nihilism. Are they not intellectual enough?

At least people who believe in nothing don't believe in any stupid shit. I'm not saying it's the happiest way to go through life, but it beats being delusional. The closest I can come to believing in an ideal is reciprocity; treat other people the way they treat you.

Before there was something there was nothing. Then people started making stuff up so they could feel better.

Thanks for the replies
Requiem for a dream, probably the most realistic depiction of drug addiction in any movie ever.
The double sided dildo scene at the end is legendary.

"The forest" sounds pretty interesting, ill see what id be able to watch it on.

We are all wired into a survival trip now. No more of the speed that fueled that 60's. That was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary's trip. He crashed around America selling "consciousness expansion" without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him seriously... All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create... a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody... or at least some force - is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.”
^ this, I would consider to be one of the most profound things Hunter S. Thompson ever wrote.

After all what ended up happening to hunter?
He got old, and took his life like many other great writers before him.

Why are intelligent people more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression?
They see our existence for what it really is.
Infinitesimally small, and utterly meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

"Though life may be meaningless, it would also be meaningless not to live"

Bad Boy Bubby.

Irreversible.

The first is Australian and has a kind of spirituality to it. The second is a film maker with some serious issues, as far as I can see. It must be a statement against sexual repression or something. Or else art is so deep, man, that I don't get it.

That was a great one. Matt Dillon having no interest in having sex with his lady Kelly Lynch. Everything centered around getting the drugs and doing them. And you get to see William S Burroughs. I like to learn things from crime movies, and this one taught things that are in no other movie. Not that I plan on ever robbing drugstores.

I think My Own Private Idaho fits this category.

Actually acid was $2 in 75-77, so it may have been less in the 60's.

I have been wanting to see that for a long time, haven't been able to find it anywhere.

Same thing with GUMMO, saw it a long time ago and havent been able to find it since.

The other day I was trying to think of some more modern examples of film with a nihilistic tone.

Little miss sunshine, I really liked that one, as bleak as it was it still managed to have a silver lining.

I've never seen Gummo, and wonder if I'd even want to -- most people I have asked (including here) who have seen it said I'd be better off never not bothering, but out of curiosity I did search for it on Amazon and several other platforms, and you're right...it appears to not be available anywhere. Not on the mainstream streaming platforms anyway.

I'm going to say Wise Blood. It's about Southern  religion, but it's centered on this loner/outcast trying to start the Church of Jesus Christ without Jesus, and whatever faith he had he loses.

It's a small little very interesting movie with several good actors.
