Keeping the ego in check?
    #2687610 - 05/16/04 06:39 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Lately, I've been feeling like I've been getting further and further from the enlightened state of mind I had after my 5g trip about a year ago. I feel like my ego has become bloated and like I need to "squigi my third eye" so to speak. However, I don't currently have access to any psychedelics, and frankly I don't want to feel like I have to use drugs to fix this problem. What are some other(non-chemical) ways of keeping your ego in check?

surround yourself with only nature
if you still are in redlands, i recommend going to forest falls. its about 15 mins from your dorms.
spend the day there
i used to do that every weekend, it works wonders

Why do you insist on going to all the trouble of making a post that says "??????" ?  I just don't understand why you(and their are others) post in a topic, when you have nothing useful to the topic at hand.  Maybe it's just me...but I enjoying helping people when I can.  Sorry if that came off somewhat rude, but hey come on...the guy is asking for advice.

Silversoul...

perhaps look into meditation and yoga?  It would take much practice to reach a state of ego death, but would be well worth it.  Very cleansing for your mind and soul

go deep inside to your center. that peaceful place that is experienced from deep iside where you just witness your drama unfold, without judging or evaluating in anyway. you just witness yourself. in this detached awareness just watch yourself as mind and ego perform in various situations. enjoy the show, so to say...impartially witness yourself. you break through all the chains when you experience every moment of your life from that deep, calm place inside you where you observe everything--and also accept everything.

this kind of awareness gives you a space between you and the surrounding world. when you are in this awareness, lifes up and downs dont effect you as much, even though your body and mind may be going through different types of drama...

"you still have to chop wood and carry water" regaurdless of where your awareness lies. you will still want to play an active part in the world around you. you will still be learning various things, interating with people, and doing your part in building a more beautiful world by living a conscious life...but YOU will not be doing it. it will only be your body and mond involved in these daily dramas of working, playing, feeling, doing, etc.. your conscious-awareness will be watching it all from a beautiful deep place inside you.

even if your body an mind go through the manifestations of anger or jealousy, you are aware that you are only playing out one of your roles in your dramatic repertory. for you are just silently witnessing

ego death would be death of the physical body, since indulging in life is a want of the ego

try fasting for two or three days, the 1st is the hardest and the hunger pains do cease or rather come and go and while your fasting meditate on positive thoughts, drink water while you fast too, fighting the ego is a daily thing for me that seems to be getting eaiser as time goes by.

Allow me to clarify.

the "?????" is a poetic expression of my inability to relate to the state of mind that would make someone see their life as a battle with the clutches of the ego. Of course, I have no advice for someone seeing the world like that as it is so far removed from my own perspective.

I suggest a new paradigm, one where you aren't constantly battling against a sense of self. To me that's a completely unnecessary and self-destructive way of seeing the world.

I would suggest you stay out of threads which you have nothing to offer

ss7: something that I've found helps soften the ego (for me, anyway) is to look at the accomplishments of others which I know are above and beyond my skill level.

---so to "soften" you ego, you partake in ego worship? strange. Heres an idea, how about viewing your ego as a positive force in your life, instead of a negative one? if you think your ego is negative, then yes, it will produce negative results.

It's not that I think the ego itself is negative, but it can be too big a force in your life. All things in moderation.

Please point me to where I said I partake in "ego worship". I would also like to know where I said that I think my ego is negative?

Looking at the accomplishments of great men before me is a humbling experience. Acts which I could never hope to match, let alone surpass help me keep my sense of ability in check.

The ego is not negative. Without the ego, there is no You. However various aspects of the ego can grow out of proportion. I think it's better to know my own limitations than to hold false views of my abilities

. know my own limitations than to hold false views of my abilities

---but the men you worship were people that did not limit themselves, men that did not humble themselves, individuals who used every ounce of their energy to push the limits of their abilities.....shouldnt you also commend that aspect of their egos?

and if so, why not emulate it?

Why do you insist on using the word "worship" to describe what I say? I most certainly did not say that I worship anyone... :smirk:

Now, knowing my own limitations does not mean I stop trying to grow or increase my skills. What it does do is give me a guideline to use in shaping my skills as they increase. It gives me a view of what I need to work on now, and what can wait for later.

See its all just the thought of expanding the consciousness.

I would have too say connecting with what people call "God"/"Source" force.

Also looking up at the stars and Space at a clear night. Just looking up and just appecting its infinite.

There are many many ways of expanding the consciousness.

Meditate, fast, take up a spiritual practice (i.e. - falun gong, yoga, or any other), spend time alone in nature, whatever you feel will help will.
