bacterial contam?
    #26874955 - 08/11/20 11:54 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Are either of these jars showing signs of bacterial contam? I'm trying to train my eyes to spot it and have a feeling but want a more experienced eye to take a look.

Def seems like it could be. The difference in whiteness of the mycelium makes me think there could be something riding along, but if you started from MS, it could be different genetics.

However, it does look slightly bacterial, IMO. Personally, I would still try fruiting it but just in a shoebox and then try cloning the best fruit and continuing onto grain again.

Ok so it's the dense opec white that's the bacterial look correct? The jar on the right is MS, the one on the right is G2G.

The thick white, ice-cream looking whiteness of the myc is what looks somewhat bacterial on the left pic. The right pic doesn't seem too bad, but maybe possible for there to be something. If it doesn't overtake the grain against the glass, I'd be a little suspect. Even with WBS pressed against the glass, clean myc should easily be able to engulf most of that. When it has trouble is definitely when you should have cause for concern.

To clarify, I do think the left jar has something. The right I cannot quite tell, but I'd definitely keep an eye on it for complete colonization.

:whathesaid:

This is what I did with my bacterial grains. It produced more than tossing them out or having them not colonize a full mono.

Is there any danger with the fruit consumption wise due to bacteria?

I heard someone mention that some forms of bacteria carry on to the fruiting body and may be the cause of nausea and diarrhea at the end of your experience.

Someone fact check me please.

No. I mean no more than a normal dose of mushrooms would cause nausea. I’ve eaten plenty from bacterial grains and never noticed a difference.

I guess it’s a matter of if you’re a pussy or not 😂 jk but I believe you’ll be pretty safe consuming em.

Also this. I don't typically fruit things that aren't healthy, but when I have in regards to bacteria, the fruits were nothing short of phenomenal. I would be mostly concerned if there were molds or yeasts affecting the fruit bodies as well. To appease a newb friend of mine, I tried some of their booms with them but they didn't know they had a yeast infection of their spawn/sub, and my god the trip was awful. We both felt like absolute crap. I have yet to see any bacteria provide that kind of less the ideal experience after ingesting.

It's interesting that yeast would have that effect when they are developing a way to grow psilocybin in yeast. I wonder what the difference is?

Moldy mushies sound terrible 😓

But very true I mean tbh I’ve eaten mushrooms that fruited from a tray that just started showing trich right around harvest time. Those were great as well.. I wouldn’t risk it if the mold had grown onto the mushroom though.

They're actually using the yeast to create psilocybin, so not exactly the same type of yeast. But that IS some exciting stuff. When they can find a way to make it cheaper and perfect it, we can all move onto expanding in these ways as well. Found this quote from an article from a quick google search:

“Recently the company COMPASS pathways developed and patented a new method for the chemical synthesis of psilocybin,” the team writes in the study, “and while it improves on previous methods with an overall yield of 75%, it uses expensive 4-hydroxyindole as a starting substrate resulting in high production costs which may limit its application.”

So it still has its current limitations with high substrate costs but shows a lot of promise for how much is makes in such small quantities. Also another quote:

"We are taking the DNA from the mushroom that encodes its ability to make this product and putting it in E. coli," said lead on the Miami University study Andrew Jones last year. "It's similar to the way you make beer, through a fermentation process. We are effectively taking the technology that allows for scale and speed of production and applying it to our psilocybin-producing E. coli."

And yeah, moldy mushies....

Just don’t try to g2g or do any large grows. I wouldn’t go larger than a shoebox like already stated above!

👍

Lately unfortunately I’ve been only able to end up with slightly bacterial spawn. So I’ve been killin it with the small loaf trays and shoeboxes. And some trays do better than others but what can ya expect from dirty spawn.

Just went to check my jars and this one looks bad to me. It was growing so well before today too, looked more silky than this. Is this one really bad or normal?
