Making Monotubs with Liners * 9

Making Monotubs with Liners
While liners are great for preventing bottom/side pins, they also make harvesting and cleanup much easier. They allow you to remove a full canopy, which you can then harvest with an electric knife or scissors much easier than having to do it inside the tub. And when the tub is spent, you can simply lift out or slide out the liner into a trash bag, leaving nothing behind to cleanup. Having 10-20 monos going at any time, this is a necessity, or I would spend way too long mixing, harvesting, and cleaning tubs. Please ask if you have any questions!

You Will Need:
- monotub (any design will do, I use the standard holes with micropore tape as a FAE regulator)
- heavy duty lawn and leaf bags (thinner ones will break when you attempt to mix the grains or lift a substrate out of the tub)
- coir / cvg
- razor blade
- scissors

Process:
- Open your lawn and leaf bag in your mono
- Mix up and dump your grains into the bag
- Measure out approximately 6 quarts of coir and add it to the bag
- Pick up bag and twist it closed
- Toss the contents on the bag around to evenly and thoroughly mix the contents
- Drop bag back in the mono
- Grab the bottom two corners and pull them up (the idea here is the bottom of the bag has creases and won't sit flat. so we pull the bottom corners up so the contents is sitting on the middle of the bag, where it will lay flat)
- Roughly push the contents of the bag out to the corners of the tub (from the outside of the bag, hands not in substrate at this point)
- Use scissors to rough-cut the excess bag off
- Using your hand, level out the surface of the substrate
- Use a razor blade to make a vertical cut along the 4 corners of the bag inside the tub (SEE NEW HOT KNIFE VIDEO BELOW TOO!)
- Use a razor blade to make horizontal cuts around the top of the substrate, and below the holes
- Grab 3 handfuls of coir / cvg to add as a top layer on top of the grains, using your hand to even out the surface
- Tape up your holes and wait patiently for fruits

Nice write-up and vid to go with it. Never thought to put all the sub/spawn mix in the trash bag and premix before going into the tub. Def will give it a try next round.

Speakin' my language, Munch. I'm sure this is one of those "damn, why didn't I try or think of this sooner" kind of things. I've spent so much unnecessary time in my tubs, mixing by hand, ensuring no clumps at the bottom or lack of grain mixed evenly throughout. All I needed to do was put it in a bag and give it a good whirl. Duh. :facepalm3: But also, ty. :yesnod:

Ya the traditional liner methods all seemed to be like... measure the liner out, cut it, place it, then fill it. Seemed easier to me to fill it first, then trim it down.

As someone that learns well from watching, I've always loved your vids, Munch. Hope you keep them coming

I've never used liners, but I'm going to try this method on the next tub I spawn. The ease of harvest seems too much to pass on.

It seems like the liner sticks to the side of the sub as it shrinks a bit. Does this always happen? If so, is there anything special to do in order for that to happen? Or does it happen naturally if you set it all up correctly?

I timed harvesting my last round of tubs and with an electric bread knife I was able to harvest all my full canopies in 5 minutes each. Using scissors I typically take about 20 minutes each.

the mycelium will just kind of grab onto the plastic as it colonizes so the liner will shrink pretty much always with the substrate so you don't really have to do anything besides having clean spawn.

Hot damn Munch, this is some 800 IQ stuff right here. You just cut my time to spawn a tub in 1/3. Awesome job as always, and thanks a ton for sharing.

Electric knife is also a great bit of info. I've wondered about them, good to know they work!

Instead of trash bags, get a roll of black plastic sheeting from the paint department. Get the 3 foot wide roll. Its way more durable then your average trash bag, and its way easier to cut out then using the wider length rolls.

I'm mixing the grains and coir inside the bag. Can't feasibly do that with a sheet, right? durability and ease of cut has never been an issue with the brand shown.

when you make a bunch of these on a regular basis, you find the shortcuts

my original method had me dumping grains into bucket tek coir and mixing it in the bucket, then pour from the bucket. but then I needed to make 20 tubs and didnt have 20 5 gallons... so I used a bigass rubbermaid to mix up 7 blocks worth, which does like 10-11 monos with my method. I had considered using a 5 gallon to mix all the tubs then pour them out individually, but figured that would cross-contaminate if any bags were bad. so this was my solution to mix in mass quickly without cross contamination.

when I make my tubs, I do these steps 10x at a time. so I'll open 10 garbage bags, cut open and dump 10 grains bags, mix all of 10 of them, etc... so its like a batch process err assembly line, not just one tub at a time. It goes a bit quicker that way.

Do you find that the sub loses a lot of moisture that runs down the walls and underneath the liner? Also does using a liner like this eliminate the possibility of bottom watering or is there a way to still do that?
