Very strange growth - Mycogone Perniciosa? Mutation?
    #26874691 - 08/11/20 09:22 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hi there! First time poster here, and first attempt at cultivating the tricky Penis Envy variety. Something strange is currently going on in one of my tubs. PE syringe to WBS to Coco coir/verm sub, cased with Jiffy Mix, all per Frank's excellent guides. The only variation from the plan is I second guessed myself and added another late casing layer. The tub was put into fruiting conditions on 7/14, and here is the current state of affairs:

I've done quit a bit of research on the board, but I'm still uncertain. The tubs smell very clean, like a mushroom and nothing else. While there is a spot or two with the amber colored secretions, it isn't pervasive enough that I feel I've got a case of wet bubble (Mycogone Perniciosa) in my tub. From looking at pictures, I don't think it is dry bubble either.

Could this be some sort of mutation? I saw a thread with brainy looking fruits from a cross between B+/PE, but I don't think this quite looks like what I have.

I excised some tissue to check it out, and here are some pictures:

Did a syringe get mixed up at the supplier and I'm growing some unknown mushroom? Are these the PE blobs that I've read so much about? Is the tub salvageable? Should I just isolate and wait and see?

Any help is much appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to read.

I don't see any blue staining in any of the pictures, even the excised pieces. There ought to be some bruising where you cut or ripped them. No blueing ought to eliminate the possibility that you are growing cubes.

Thanks for the response! The picture was taken right after the sample was extracted. Now there is some slight bruising, but it doesn't look all that blue. However, for science, I used a reagent test (Ehrlich) for the presence of indole alkaloids, and lo and behold, the sample is active. Here are the results, extracted sample on the left and a bit of portobello on the right for comparison. Note the purple hue of the sample on the left indicating indole alkaloids.

Might be similar mutation to the enigma culture that’s going around. Looks similar to it (maybe a few differences).

Thanks Pasty. I agree; what I'm growing does look rather enigmatic. These PE spores came from Spore Works. I'd be curious to hear how these other tidal wave grows started. I'm going to roll with it and keep this thread updated.
