First grow! Need some opinions. Side fruiting?

Hey everyone. This is my first grow. I am keeping my Temps between 70 and 76 degrees. I am keeping my humidity between 80 and 90%. Fae twice to three times a day. Just curious as to why I am getting alot of side growth on the tubs and wondering if it will just take more time for them to break the top surface. I have one tub that is doing extremely well from the top. If anyone has any suggestions or light to shed on this grow please drop a comment. Thanks for the view.

It's those trays. When you spawned, you pushed the flimsy edges outward and then the substrate pulled back and created a perfect microclimate there. Something like plastic or glass wouldn't deform as badly and would prevent such a wide gap around the edges. You can also prevent this by using a liner.

Thank you so much for the great insight. Do you think they will start pinning on top, just taking a little longer? Also on a first flush I could transfer them to a different container relatively easy? Or stick with what I have? Again thank you, much appreciated info. Trying a couple different small variations to fine tune the techniques I want to move forward with.

Looks like you're going to get some mushrooms so I'd just let this one ride and plan for the next go around.

Did you put a really thick top layer when you made them?
Also did you scratch the surface? The last ones got those lines

No I didn't scratch the surface. I packed the top layer down slightly with the back of my hand which those lines are actually my handprint. And what are you referencing as far as thick top layer? Like I said I was trying a couple different variations. Like putting a layer of colonized grain last, or putting my sub last. Also the one with the real thick layer of mycelium on top I actually though I saw contam. on it so I moved it away from my other tubs and put it in a trash bag for 3-4 days in the garage and when I checked on it it had the first mushroom I have ever grown looking right back at me. I def think the bag over the tub helped raise co2 level and colonized better. I am hoping I get a good cover on the tops of my bulk sub, I believe I had them too dry, I passed up hand misting for a humidifier but now I am misting 4-5 times a day to get the water content up. Any thoughts on all that?

In my experience, you'll continue to get predominantly side-pins in subsequent flushes. As was stated earlier, as long as the microclimate between the side of the tray and the side of the substrate is more humid than the top of the substrate (which it will always be), you'll keep getting sidepins.
On your next flush you could try using wax paper or bubble wrap as a "casing", in order to try to make a more competitively appealing top layer... but in reality, just accept that you'll get beautiful and potent side-pins from this grow, and try a different tek next time around.

Yea, I don't mind the side pins at all aside from the quantity of the yield, but like I said this is my first attempt at cultivation period so for me im beside myself. So happy, and to watch these beauties grow is an honor. Im hooked now.

Your surface conditions are to dry that's why they're all coming on the sides is you have no top micro-climate going on. The mushrooms are fruiting at the micro-climate where its wet. dunk them and try to keep better attention to surface conditions for the next flush with fine misting make sure you tiny beads of water on the surface at all times.
