The popcorn was "yellow" and organic. Soaked not boiled. Jars were also put into the oven at 170° for like 45min and shaken frequently before putting into the pc for 2hours. Don't ask me why it was put in the oven it was an experiment I suppose but it seemed to have either helped or not done any harm because the spores have taken hold just fine!

In fact The other jar is prepared the same way except "white" popcorn was used instead and they were g2g inoculated using RGS . These jars are also doing much better than any of the WBS jars.

Yes the first 2 pics were the "yellow" variety and the 3rd pic was the "white" kind. Don't ask me what the difference is it's just what the package says hah

Nice to see someone else trying popcorn. I’ve tried a handful of them, and besides my MS hold ups the popcorn has been impressive compared to the oat jars I have attempted. Oats sure are cheap but popcorn is easy and the mycelium really seems to like it

we have to prove you can get full canopy with a reasonable amount of popcorn spawn, so maybe start tallying some weights of what we use and the results.
gonna start writing down the size of the totes i use, and weigh how much colonized corn Im using, and try to follow a flush or three from start to finish

That particular jar stalled a little and after a shake I noticed some blackish kernels so I chunked it but the other 6 I have going are doing great. I'll post pics in a bit.
Nice pic smalltalk!

Thank you, the JMF has a really aggressive mycelium compared to the others I’ve been messing with. I can’t wait to spawn them, also have a few hopeful agar transfers from each

Here are some g2g jars I did using RGS

The two that got contamination had been kernels that were soaked in bee pollen and nutritional yeast water. The contam seemed bacterial so I don't think I'll be using nutritional yeast during that stage anymore

Using 1 QT jars, I feel like they’re a pretty average size

I had 4 jars not recover from being shaken that were doing really nicely. I assumed they were just bacterial and blame it on the MS syringe

fuck, i just read this:
Quote:
Roger Rabbit:
Actually, it's best not to shake at inoculation in order to allow the spores to germinate in close proximity to each other. Horse manure does not increase potency.
Corn does not harbor green mold. Molds are killed off by temperatures well below boiling. It has a high bacterial endospore count, but that's not the only reason it's inferior to other grains. The main reason is that the large kernel size means you have far less mycelium per jar than you'd have with traditional grains such as rye or wbs. It takes at least four jars of popcorn to have the same amount of mycelium as one similar sized jar of rye or wbs. That's why it's rarely used anymore. I recently tossed out a huge bag of it, because I don't like getting popped corn stuck in my teeth, and it sucks as a spawn medium, unless you have no other options. Good luck. RR
Looks like corn is a dead end grain

That’s what they say but it doesn’t mean you can’t find success with it. I have oat jars running too but I like messing with the popcorn

Popcorn works just like any grain you can hydrate and sterilize without it loosing its structure. But the grains are definitely large, especially compared to WBS or milo itself. You get probably 4-5x the inoculation points and more nutrition per qt used with those. Even oats would be like double or triple the inoc points. Popcorn’s only strong point imo is the smell during the PC cycle. It’s by far the best smelling grain I’ve tried.
