1st time with logs. Need advice
    #26871485 - 08/09/20 12:02 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hi. I have acquired 40 white oak logs about 4 ft long & 3 to 6 in in diameter. The tree was cut 2 to 3 weeks ago. It has bark missing in some spots from the fall. The logs have been on grass where tree was and moved to my yard about 1 week ago. I will be moving them today to full shade and stacking on a pallet to get them off the grass. Almost every evening it has down poured for an hour or so. I want to purchase a bag of Shiitake spawn to inoculate asap, but I am not sure if all will be well because of the time of year and the other issues mentioned above. Should I wax over large areas to retain moisture? Actually I had hoped to do 1/2 with oyster, but not sure how they like white oak. Should I cut logs to a manageable length for soaking? All advice is much appreciated. Thanks

You shouldn't have to soak the logs because they're fresh, they will have enough water in them. You can keep the logs at their current length, the oysters will grow on any hard wood. Get the logs inoculated and then stack them in them in the shade, make sure they don't dry out. Just wax over the inoculation holes.
