NTSC & PAL Formats (Still Relevant?)
    #26871026 - 08/09/20 06:06 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

So a couple of months ago I bought a Go Pro which said on the cover, that it records 4k at 60 frames per second.  Well, after going through the settings I found out that the Go Pro was set to NTSC format (for it's region settings).  I then set it to PAL and then the options for 4k recording changed to 50 fps.

I believe that it's actually false advertising for us Australian customers (but that's another issue).

So basically my question is..... does it matter anymore?

So If I record a video with the region set to NTSC and play it on my computer (with pal tv) or my main (PAL) tv, will it display exactly the same as if I recorded the same Go Pro video in PAL format?  And if not what will be the difference?, the pixels count or only the hertz?, or both?  I do know that for awhile now that most PAL TVs and some video (VHS) players would allow the viewing of NTSC content on a PAL set up, but I was raised with the understanding that both formats were incompatible with each other because of a different pixel count and a lower Hertz rate (for NTSC) if I remember correctly.

So what's going on?

btw, for those in America, How many pixels by pixels is your 4k TV's display (resolution and hertz?)

In Australia, 4k equals/means a resolution of 3840 x 2160 at 60 hertz.

So be a PAL and help me understand please cause it's making my brain Hertz  :awkwardconfusion:

I would like to ntsC what you think/know about this

The only difference is frame rate. It will affect video size. That's why its there. 4k is 4k they shouldn't have a ntsc and pal setting for 4k realistically it should be a 60 and 50 fps setting but old names stuck.

Ntsc is actually 29.97 hz and Pal is 25 hz
so who knows why they keep the names

Thank you for that info bodhisatta

My video editor from 2020 still has NTSC & PAL presets, but none for mobile phones or GoPro's.  Seems odd.

So i might as well set it back to ntsc (on gopro) to get those extra frames per second if that's the only difference.

Thanks again
