So I'm going to ask everyone their opinion.
If you had never seen any Star Wars films before, would you start with 1. The Phantom Menace or 4. A New Hope?

Start with the originals so you can fall in love with the story the way the old timers did. Then you can be properly disappointed by episodes 1 2 and 3.

That's just it he should start with the good ones so he doesn't get annoyed by jar jar and lose interest. If I watched 1 or 2 first as an adult rather than the originals as a kid I might not have gotten as into it.

Good insights.
So I've seen them but this is for my wife. She hasn't seen any and isn't a big scifi fan. Actually i have only seen 4,5,6 then 1 and 2.
I thought starting at 4 too. But as a complete stranger to it then she has no knowledge of it apart from common knowledge that Darth Vader is Luke's father. I feel the story would flow better starting at 1 but it's true that you would have to suffer through jar jar where as if you started with the originals you would actually like the series and be able to get past the new ones better.

4, 5 and 6 are true science-fiction fables. Start with 4, a new hope. And watch the originals from the 70s / 80s! The originals are the best, they editied these episodes in 200x and added new, fully computer generated, scenes to the plot. Many peolpe, including me, don't like this.
In the old movies, all alien actors wore handmade masks and all spacecrafts were true plastic models, recorded in front of a greenscreen. No computer renders etc..
The newer episodes were all almost fully computer generated. Some actors, and even the landscapes, all CGI.
The old movies are truly magical. They have an atmosphere and feel to them that the new movies lack, imo.

If nothing else you have to watch 4-6 first simply because they're wildly known as the best of the series and you can only do something for the first time once, meaning the first thing you watch will set the stage for how you see all the other films. I think if someone hasn't seen Star Wars, even if you don't like it you should try to still understand why people are so salty with the direction of the series and you just can't do that if you're wanting to die because you started with the latest Disney installment.

4-6 then 1-3. After those go for all the recent ones.

I would go to great lengths to avoid having to watch the Star Wars series.
As a kid our dad took us to Return of the Jedi and even as a little impressionable child I was astonished by just how badly it sucked.
Absolute pulp.

I may be in the minority here, but yeah they sucked. The Last Jedi was only watchable one of the bunch, and people hated it.

All the new ones suck after the first watch. There’s literally no reason to watch them twice.
Don’t even get me started on piece of garbage JarJar.

Yeah, it had a plot and wasn't full of bad space opera acting (though the casino bit was unneeded)

I find the new movies (ep. 7, 8, 9) better than ep 1 - 3.
I also liked Rogue One. But Solo really sucks.
