Active Mushrooms in NorthWest Missouri
    #2685152 - 05/16/04 01:26 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I was wanting to know the active mushrooms that are known to be found in the state of Missouri and their habitats please. I've found many in parks but, I havn't gone to any cow/horse fields. I plan on going to a horse field close to my home tommorrow and I was wanting to know what I should be looking for and where. thanks

That wouldn't be all would it? Because it seems like on that page, their are hardly any hallucinogenic mushrooms in Missouri. I should have said that I just would like to know the hallucinogenic mushrooms that grow wild in Missouri.

It's not a great place for active mushrooms. I used to find a number of edible species in Swope Park in Kansas City when I was stationed there. I'd look in the wild areas.

As far as actives go, Panaeolus subbalteatus and probably some Gymnopilus species are your likely species.

For those who want to find active mushrooms, you really want to spend your time on the Gulf Coast or the Pacific Northwest. The rest of the country is relatively lacking.

Happy mushrooming!

To find Panaeolus subbalteatus, would I need to be looking in cow shit or can they grow in wood chips and what not?

I found some mushrooms in some mulch by a small pine in the park. They resembled "inky caps" so I threw them away. Then I just looked at a post and they look like P. Subbs. Do P. Subbs. grow in mulch?
The mushroom:

Cap= Bell Shaped, 1 inch in diameter
Stem= White,center attached
Bruising= Kinda bluish,purple
Its slimly too
Spore Print= Jet black

I highly suggest you take a look at our mushroom hunting FAQs(and by take a look, I mean read) or you're going to find a lot of your posts getting locked. While your looking around be sure to take a look at the rules of the hunting forum. That will save both you and the moderators some headache.

Enjoy your stay here.
