Not occupying Hawaii and not trying impose strict restrictions on commercial and naval practices thousands of miles away away from DC in the Pacific.

The American naval presence in the Pacific was intrusive, imperialistic, and immoral. Instead of dropping atomic weapons on civilian populations and fire bombing Tokyo America should have apologized and gone home. America was the bad guy and the aggressor and the attack on Pearl Harbor was entirely justified.

 we needed a base to protect the west coast. There was nothing justified about the Pearl Harbor attack. And it’s ironic hearing you call out imperialism, when imperialism is what led Japan to attack Pearl Harbor in the first place. The Japanese Empire decided to expand. They misjudged.

America has a coast on the Pacific so their naval presence there is essential. Also a bit late at that point to not have Hawaii as sovereign territory. And no, Japan was the bad guy in APAC. Aggressor means they attacked first.

Hawaii was straight up white colonial theft.

America was all up in Japan’s shit about trade with the Philippines

Japan fought off an American invasion not vice versa. Japan targeted legit military targets. America targeted civilians.

Scientists, including Japanese scientists, knew of the reality of the Atomic bomb. The US had footage of a 20 kiloton nuke test in the desert. They had the worlds top scientists who wanted to stop deployment, so who would have testified about the horrid amount of buurn and radioactivity casualties that would ensue atop those of the blast damage.

The US had 2 bombs so they could have used one for a demonstration on Japanese soil and if all that was not enough, use the second one as a weapon.

Interestingly, if you see the Japanese war flag its like they had a premonition.

Could be, although it still took two bombs being dropped and the Soviets declaring war for them to surrender. Plus it was as much of a show of force to the Soviets as it was the final blow on Japan.

The US military wanted to assess their new weapon, see what it would do.

Nagasaki came on the 9th, 3 days after Hiroshima. The news about what had happened to Hiroshima wasn't properly out yet and the photos and films weren't even developed for the Japanese Government to have a true insight of what atrocity had taken place.

If they had waited, Russia would have declared war and Hiroshima alone would have done it.

But no, Little Boy was an 235U based Gun design. Useless. Fat Man was a 239Pu implosion design like Trinity which could be mass produced. They had to rush one in BEFORE Japan capituated to then analyze what this much more readily produced and much more radiotoxic bomb did with a city.

235U has a half-life of 703.8 million years.

239Pu has a half-life of 24,110 years

That makes plutonium 29,191x more radioactive per mole than uranium.

Japan fucked up, if they attacked western Mongolia, the US would likely have stayed neutral for quite a bit longer.  The bombs were unnecessary and simply used as tests.  After the losses at Midway, Iwo-Jima and Okinawa, Japan was close to surrendering anyhow. Not to mention the fire bombings did significantly more damage than the bombs.

Japan, due to conventional weapons was nearly out of munitions, the Eastern theater was a foregone conclusion before the bombs.

A lesser evil that still affects the residents 75 years after? Every time the US attacks other countries, it's presented as "the right thing to do". I bet that the innocent civilians getting tortured and killed have a different opinion. Would you meet a Japanese person whose family has been affected and tell him "I wasn't even alive back then but I know it was the lesser evil"?

Nope.  Right after the attack on Pearl Harbor Japan did the Philippines dirty.

I’d assume the Chinese would disagree with this statement.  And the Japanese sent random balloon bombs across the ocean, they did target American civilians.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were legit military targets.

I don't think we needed to ban Japanese cities. Surely there were military targets like naval bases we could have hit.

I imagine prejudice and stereotyping the "crazy suicidal Japs who'd rather die than surrender" influenced the decision.

Quote:

When the monster Godzilla, or “Gojira,” appeared before Japanese movie audiences in 1954, many left the theaters in tears.

The fictional creature, a giant dinosaur once undisturbed in the ocean, was depicted in the original film as having been aggravated by a hydrogen bomb. Its heavily furrowed skin or scales were imagined to resemble the keloid scars of survivors of the two atomic bombs that the U.S. dropped on Japan nine years earlier to end World War II.

American audiences, however, had the opposite reaction, finding comedic value in what many interpreted as a cheesy monster movie.

“Most Americans think if you left the movie in tears, it was just because you laughed so hard,” William Tsutsui, author of “Godzilla on My Mind: Fifty Years of the King of Monsters,” told NBC Asian America.

The stark contrast reflects how Hollywood took the Japanese concept and scrubbed it of its political message before presenting it to American audiences to deflect from the U.S. decision to drop the bombs, critics say.
