windowspatch.info ---????
    #2687031 - 05/16/04 05:02 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I got a dialog window ~pop-up saying I needed to go to windowspatch.info to download a critical patch for Windows XP, etc. Is this legit? I've always been super-sketchy about patching anything, especially an odd pop-up that seemed non-native.

Anyone ever heard of this?

Never believe pop-up windows you get from simple web-surfing.

These aren't from websurfing, they're part of windows... you can get it with out msie being open at all. You have to go to start > settings > control panel >administrative tools > services > find "messenger", right click > properties, then select "startup type = diabled", and click "stop", then click "ok"

excellent. thanks guys.

They're not necessarily pop ups from browsing, like Drink said. They are dialog windows with a button at the bottom. Real annoying.

while you're modifying your services, visit http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm and see what else should be disabled or set to manual.
