Spawn bags too moist and grey rot
    #26868505 - 08/07/20 02:22 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Our process:
1. soak Rye grain for 12-24 hours
2. get it up to a boil for 5 minutes
3. dry it by using a series of strainers (pouring back and fourth until no longer steaming)
4. place in filtered spawn bags (about 1/4 full)
5. insert tyvek for bag opening filter then fold and tape, wrap with foil
6. PC for 90 minutes at 15 psi., allow to cool
7. open in front of a flow hood, add colonized grain or agar, seal with impulse sealer

We do steps 6 and 7 in a room just for mushrooms kept at 72 degrees with gloves, masks and tyvek sleeves all sprayed with 72% IPA

The problem is inconsistency. Some bags look and colonize perfectly, some get a grey powdery (mold?), some get standing water/moisture, some even get the yellow fluid at the bottom of the bag.

The impulse sealer, sometimes, will create small perforated holes and I use micropore tape all the way around for extra seal, but maybe I should be using masking tape? Or would the wire rap method be better?

The grain is slightly damp (not completely dry) when going into the spawn bags. It that okay or must the grain be literally dry on the outside?

The room has "normal" non-direct sunlight. Is this okay for the spawn bags or should they be kept in the dark (i.e. a closet)?

Any and all recommendations and tips are welcome for any step in the process. We have arrived at this method after watching/reading many (sometimes contradicting) videos and forums.

Thank you for your time and advice in advance!

I would say your not pressure cooking long enough. In my opinion you need to do at least 4 hours and don't over load your cooker. Bags are a bitch to dial in.

You may be on to something. The time yes, but especially over loading. We usually put 5-6 bags into a Presto PC so it's a tight fit. I know it's hard to describe, but how much is too much? Like, is at least an inch around each bag a good target? Thanks!

You're just not PCing long enough, 90 minutes is fine for jars but you want 120 minimum for bags. I've seen people pack six into their Presto just fine.

I can stuff 6 in a Presto with 5 quarts each. However you'll probably run out of water with the extra time required. I've been putting 4 in with a rasied bottom for extra water. Also weighted down toggle to lower evaporation and push higher psi.
