Balkanization of the internet

U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled sweeping bans on U.S. transactions with the Chinese owners of messaging app WeChat and video-sharing app TikTok, escalating a high-stakes confrontation with Beijing over the future of the global tech industry.

The large Western messaging apps have been banned in China for a long time already, with the CCP maintaining extremely strict control over what sites/content is permitted on their internet. Assuming these services (mostly WeChat) aren’t sold to different companies, this would create a larger rift between the two tech spheres.
India has stepped up its restrictions on Chinese services as well. Do you think this trend will continue, or is it a temporary trend? If it does, it’s not hard to imagine each major country having its own unique version internet.

It seems Trump is mirroring what other countries are already doing. They have higher tariffs? We'll match them. They restrict our software? We'll restrict theirs.
-------------------- I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them. I also attack my side if I think they're wrong. People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

This trend will explicitly continue.
I expect there to be three different internets by 2030: Chinese, US, and EU.

You're right about the Chinese media stuff. The economic tariffs cut both ways. On Thursday Trump announced he was reinstating a 10% tariff on Canadian Aluminum. The next day Canada announced they will impose 3.6 billion dollar tariffs on the U.S. in retaliation. Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland said, "Canada will respond swiftly and strongly".
A while back Trump said he was great at tariff wars. I don't think he is and, these kinds of reactions, IMO are why other Presidents haven't been as gung ho about tariffs.

Trump has proven himself to be so mind-numbingly incompetent, that even if a broken clock is right twice a day, he somehow managed to pick the wrong day.

I know. Especially lately. Before the broken clock was right twice a day. But since Corona, he hasn't had a single good day, even by accident.

Just feel the need to say, that tiktok and indeed any other app, software or service run through China is a threat to the US's security. Chinese law allows the govt to use anything and everything the companies have. From data to your mic, location and camera's permissions, meaning that if a 5 star general has their personal phone with tiktok installed and they go to a secret base with it, that base is no longer a secret.
Definitely don't support the idiot in chief, however this is the best thing he has done the US' security in his term.

US law allows the same thing, we call it a National Security Letter.
See, there is a way to achieve the same results not by banning tiktok, but by banning indiscriminate data collection on citizens by tech companies. Like the GDPR in the EU.
But then Facebook, the biggest data vacuum in the world, and Amazon, the biggest server storage provider/algorithm developer for that data in the world, might lose some of their profits. Can't have that. Best to just build a firewall around the US internet and heavily restrict incoming information. Plus, there's the side benefit of not allowing your citizens to see things that they don't need to see and hear opinions they don't need to hear.
Think of the Children!
(Not to mention, if facebook and amazon lose any profits, the stock market is gonna drop like 40%, they're the only reason the stock market is up at all since March, so...)

I'm not saying you're wrong. But if you are right giving TicTok several months to get sold off to an American company seems like the threat to American security is not too imminent.
Trump wants it sold to Oracle rather than Microsoft because the head of Oracle is his buddy and political supporter. Trump also keeps maintaining that the U.S, government gets to take a pile of money from the sale, but legal experts keep saying WTF are you talking about.

That's kind of how right wing neoliberal movements have operated for the last century or so.
Reject worker rights, reject social safety nets, eliminate minimum wages, remove regulations. A youtube video I watched the other day put it very well.
TL;DR: (paraphrasing the last five minutes of the video, basically)
Say you're a working class white guy and you know you're being screwed. You know you're working harder, for less than your parents had. You know something is wrong with society. So wealthy men with resources you never had start giving you somewhere to direct your anger. They start making promises. If you can just get rid of "those" that are attacking your way of life, you will have a better world. Just like your parents. They promise you power. They tell you they'll make good on that promise.
It all becomes so clear, as you work your hands to the bone, eking out a meager living. You remove them by whatever means. Means that make you sick to think about.
When the dust settles, you're told to go back to work. The union organizers that once won you your paltry wage are in the ground now. So you're being paid half as much. Your boss was a sympathizer, and hasn't been heard from in months. Your workplace, like so many others, has been bought out by a much larger conglomerate during the period of deregulation. Now you check in when you come and go. Now you check in when you go to the bathroom, and if you spend too long, you're penalized. Your job performance is monitored and rated. The people in power were never the threat, though. You've won nothing.
You carry on like that for a few decades, while the papers all gush about this new democratic era of prosperity, after the..."dark times", that we don't talk about in detail.
One day, you start hearing a familiar line again. "We're losing our national identity", "things were so good when our parents were kids, before THEY started arriving on our shores".
Your boss buys a new yacht.
