Enkidu said: Theres definitely levels to being sore.
Im not going to say youre wrong, to each their own.
But if youre so sore you cant work out then you need more time to recover.
And if you dont push yourself that hars and go to say 70% vs 100%, you can workout more often, feel better, and over the course of a year youre overall output will be far greater.
But yeah, going to the extreme is the typical and more common belief.
I just personally dont adhere to it and find it not as useful after hearing some professionals speak about. It makes sense.
70% 5 days a week > 100% 3 days a week
And i personally found it better to my overall level of productivity and happiness in life.
Being sore all the time to that degree is a waste of time imo.
But again, to each their own.
Theres no wrong way to it if youre exercising properly.
Be consistent, grt a baseline, then move forward and increase.
Good luck op, you dont have to be sore all the time or be so sore you csnt exercise to see gains and improvement.
But again, thats just me, and that isnt exactly the typical belief when it comes to working out.
People are all about pushing to the extreme but i use to have those same people ask me about how im so cut.
What you said here is correct I wouldn't argue that, nor was I insinuating some sort of elitist/absolutist position. Everything you said here checks all the boxes for fairly ideal training. My thing is I only train to the degree I can actually recover from, and I instruct my clients in the same manner. As you said, the average person benefits more from a moderate intensity spread between 4-6 days a week. I've never, ever, EVER trained through muscle soreness, and I'm also one of the very few people I personally know that has never had an injury from working out. You shouldn't be getting hurt lifting this is a point I will argue. It's never worth the set backs and potential chronic issues I don't give a fuck if you're training for a competition or pushing personal goals. It's foolish and the fitness industry is packed with at-all-costs bullshit that gives a very counterproductive image for someone looking to stay healthy longterm.

Not directed entirely at you, just some of the responses, if you read op, he says hes sore as fuck not knowing if its normal and saying he has work and other shit going on in his life
I just wanted to make sure he knew he doesnt need to feel that way
It is typical to be sore as fuck if you havent worked out in a while and over do it
Probably a lot of us have been there
So i just wanted to offer what i hoped was some decent advice to help
You mentioned you do this for a living i thought so i imagine you know what youre doing and what youre talking about
But a lot of people who dont, or who think they know, throw out their 2 cents
And op needed some helpful advice
Hes basicslly asking what to do when he feels like that and i say rest up and then go back in and dont over do it
Id also highly recommend calisthenics if you are just starting out and you dont have that base strength
Its easier on your body while working more muscle groups
Use to see these sticks at the gym trying to lift and its like dude you arent even ready
But idk man i guess my methods are just that, my methods, but theres also more ways to do this shit
I was always about health and overall fitness. I wanted to be sculpted and not necessarily be the guy who looks fat but can bench 300lb
All about your goals and shit and what you value
My methods arent great for building thst high level of strength required to lift heavy
So first off op needs to have some clearlt defined personal goals for what he hopes to achieve in order to reach them
And understand how different methods are better equipped to reach those different goals, ya know?
I almost think i shoulda got into training people about diet and exercise and holistic health instead of what im doing now ..

What I tell friends who have hard physical jobs: eat proteinaceous snacks during the day and especially a easily digestible one right before bed, so your body has the building blocks to repair itself, a process which especially occurs while you sleep.

lots of good info in this thread! Do y'all have any input on just "freestyling" your calisthenics without designated body part days?
I don't necessarily mean spot reduction but like if you've been sitting around not standing much that day- then do something focusing on legs that afternoon, am I on the right track?
I am very nervous about erroneously doing "bad" exercise!

Do what feels right. If it hurts, stop.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. I mean you want it to hurt some like in a certain way right? Like youre supposed to feel a burn sort of right?
I like to just get down square up and do the most perfect pushups I can Even if I can only do 2, it feels so good feeling my muscles line up and resist/push the weight back.
Id be a weird gym guy, man.

I dunno about hurt. It's like stretching, there is a point at which you're tight and its sort of uncomfortable to push against, but as the tension releases it feels better.

So it’s already been said in great detail but... 1) Just start, don’t start hard 2) establish a routine, know when you go 3) build up to longer & harder work outs 4) always, ALWAYS, stretch, warm up, cool down, and stretch again.
I like to do yoga for a stretch, warm up & cool down. I like to do a mix of kettlebells, free weights and calisthenics and focus on muscle groups Day 1: arms/chest Day2: back/core Day 3: legs Day 4: working rest (yoga, walk, push ups, etc, no weights)

I don't think anyone has mentioned Glutamine yet. It's excellent for assisting in post workout recovery.

What do yall think about creatine?
Creatine is legit-- for those that respond to it. As stated above, it is too cheap not to try. You'll know within 7-10 days whether you are a responder. You'll feel swollen and get super crazy pumps where your muscles stay turgid for 30 mins or more. It's actually kind of crazy. My strength generally increases 4-8% when I am using creatine. The swelling can be annoying/unsightly, but I find that it generally dissipates after the first 30-60 days. You don't really need to cycle it either, just make sure to drink lots of water.

Obvious answers but rest and hydration!
Supplements can be utilized with great success but "simple" things like proper rest hydration and diet go a very long way with regard to any fitness regimen
Good on ya for starting some good habits, hope for the best

I had the same problem when I was overweight. My legs were the most to suffer. I can't describe the pain and soreness that I felt. It was awful. I contacted a nutritionist, and she advised me to follow pre-workout and post-workout regimens. I am not an expert, so I don't guarantee anything, but what worked for me is consuming lots of protein before and after my workout and consuming high-quality fitness supplements from rats.army that helped me recover and get that "high energy." I can't recommend anything specific for supplements since each body is different, and you have to do your research.
