No pinning in SGFC- first grow.

Hi guys,
This is my first growing attempt. I studied for months before taking the plunge and I have some brf cakes which are currently in a sgfc. They've been in there for 9 days with no sign of pins.
I had waited over a week after full colonization to put then in the fruiting chamber. I dunked for 24 hours and rolled in vermiculite- my vermiculite isn't fine and quite a bit has failed off the cakes so not sure if that is the problem.
I also found some little flies on the cakes a few days ago so I looked on here and put some apple cider vinegar in there with them and some sticky fly strips which seems to have dealt with that.
The temp in there is 22- 24 degrees. And the humidity is 99%. I mist and fan 4 times a day. They are just in the lounge with me so have natural light during the day and then darkness in the evening/night.
Any tips/ideas?
Thanks in advance

I would suggest only lightly misting once in the morning, then once at night, 4 time is excessive. Also you need to at least double, if not triple the amount of perlite you have there. Sgfc needs 4-5 inches of perlite. And just be patient :-) it’ll happen

Patience. Usually my monos pin after 11 days, so you're all most there.

Hi guys,
Thanks for your replies. I've now got a couple of pins on one cake
I'm wondering if the other cake looks healthy. I've attached a pic. Am I just being paranoid or does this look bad...?
Thanks again!

What does putting the cakes close together do?

Hi there, I do have holes spaced all around the bottom and I've got the plastic tub stood on some little jars to elevate it for air flow.

Ohh ok. Can I mist the cake directly as I've only been misting the sides of the sgfc? Thanks

plastic dont grow mushrooms lol so feel free to mist them sirectly just let it fall on the cakes so they glisten is all dont soak them. as far as the sides go there really is no point to mist them. it works by bringing air up thru the perlite misting the side ajnt providing no humidity.

Aww my poor little cakes are probably bone dry- no wonder they're struggling! I have some healthy plastic over here though haha got that one wrong. Thank you.
I've misted them up and will hope they recover from the drought

I have read the SGFC should be at least a foot off the ground for proper air exchange. Putting the cakes as close together as you can will help keep the micro climate excellent around the cakes. My SGFC "works" much better when it's almost full. About one inch or two of spacing between the cakes. The fruit will find room to grow where they want

Does anybody think it would be worthwhile to scrape off the vermiculite and to redunk the really dry cake and try and start over with it?

You could do that. Maybe not as long as 24 hours. A lot of guys would suggest getting a small tea cup dish or some other tray and laying it in there for a bit to wick up some water. Depends on how dry it got. I wouldn't "scrape" the verm off, just give it a thorough washing under the tap before you dunk it if you do. No need to mess with it if you wick up water in a tray. I have never used the tray idea, you really need to force the water into the mycelium cells, so that's why you dunk under water with them weighed down. It helps get the water inside the cells rather than just pooling around the cake.

Also, you can try making a small "tent" out of wax paper and putting that over the top of the cake after you mist to help keep the micro climate nice close to the cake. I've done this to encourage pinning sometimes and it works great.
