I was asked this question last year and I can't say for certain yet. It makes sense to say that they are more prevalent on slopes/hills considering a driving force of mushroom propagation is wind. Spores will travel far if they begin high on the slope with winds blowing down or across.
There's a spot in the mountains I discovered by the end of the season last year (pic below). I plan to attack this location at season peak to help answer this. I went scouting there other day, still too dry for anything but great exercise! The picture really doesn't do the true slope justice but maybe the pistol-butt trees help portray that. My legs were beat.

Hi very nice find Ale. I have a question for Tak and those hunters who have been hunting the blue foot for a couple years. Do they can grow on the exact same log for many years? Or the exact location?
I found more than a hundred last year, the 5 september in Québec. Im planning on hunting the exact same spot real soon. Just curious to know about your past experiences. Thank you.

Hoping to get my fingers covered in these spores this year. This species has eluded me for too long. I feel like I'm hunting the right habitat so maybe my timing has just been off. The grow under beech and hemlock from what I've read on here.

In my experience they grow in the same area and similar habitats most years, but do NOT come back on the same log very often. They prefer a specific age/state of decay on logs, and it’s usually in the later stages of decomposition just before they start to break apart or get soggy. I have better luck finding them in the surrounding area mixed with leaf litter but it is much more difficult to spot them because they are so small and blend in well. They also require high humidity and usually only have one flush per year.
After hunting for several years here they almost always appear during the same month or time frame. Mid to late August is prime time for my habitats. As long as we get good rain during the right period I can usually find a few scattered around the beech stands nearby. I spend most of the year just searching for potential habitats and then have a small window to go back scan for the tiny little things.

Someone posted a great guide recently on this particular species and I can't find it.

Hemlocks have been a common sighting near caerulipes for years. They grow directly off the hardwoods but something about hemlock does seem to help regulate their preferred habitat. I guess hemlock is so common in the forests around me that I never took the time to notice. Thanks for sharing this guide!

Didnt really drop any significant spore print, as Id said I think I caught em too late. Going up there again after the rains come through, hopefully we'll have some more, or luckily some gymns! Oh and sorry for ghosting for a bit, Ive only had a handful of finds lately bit I dont believe any are active.

Are the two related? Because they look so similar in appearance.
They aren't closely related - ovoideocystidiata is close to P. cubensis and P. caerulipes is close to P. pelluclosa, P. fimetaria, P. baeocystis and P. semilanceata.
Psilocybe aztecorum/quebecensis also was probably just spotted in northern Pennsylvania, I have material on the way to verify this.

These relationships are so interesting Alan. I thought ovoids being wood lovers wouldn’t be close to cubensis. I wish to find more information on how mushrooms are related to one another. I’m sure this a noob question but what am I looking for?

That's a pretty broad question, but maybe check out https://www.facebook.com/groups/FungalSequencing
Wood lovers aren't all related, it's a trait scattered around the genus.
