Colonization Status (thoughts?)
    #26866898 - 08/06/20 05:20 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hello all,

I am new to growing mushrooms and I have been having a blast learning during my first grow attempt. I decided to start with a grow kit that includes substrate jars and so far things seem to be moving along well. I am attempting to grow from SSKS spores since I read they were easy for beginners and fast colonizing.

I am on day 23 after inoculation and none of the jars seem to be fully colonized yet. I've been keeping the jars at a consistent 85 degrees for about 15 hours of the day. At night the temp dips down to 75 degrees which I'm thinking might be causing the slow colonization. Does anyone have experience with SSKS? Does this seem normal? They all still seem to be showing progress, but pretty slow. Here are pictures of the current state of some of the jars. Any suggestions or help is much appreciated.

I wouldn't go above 80F ever.

No need to keep them above 75 degrees f.

And they may have stalled due to high temps. Room temp works fine but also slow progression is still something so long as it doesn’t look contaminated or smell funny when you birth it later on.

the temp in the jar is 10 degrees warmer than the outside temperature so be careful not to put the room temp too high.

They look pretty good and almost done, next time you should take the foil off so they can breathe a little. Is that a pin or something else in the middle of the second pic?

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Great to know about the temps! I read a few places this strain likes higher temperatures which is why I have been keeping it at 85. I think I'm going to let them go through the weekend (at 75) and see how they are looking on Monday. I'm planning on birthing and trying the dunk & roll technique.

Will update if anyone is interested. Thank you again for the thoughtful responses.

I birthed, dunked, and rolled the 3 that looked ready last Sunday. I let the last 2 sit a few more days and decided to bypass the dunk and roll just to see the difference in progression among those and the first 3. I've been keeping the cakes at a constant 70-75 degrees with at least 90% humidity. 12 hours light, 12 hours darkness. spraying 3-5 times a day and fanning 5-6 times a day.

Here is a picture of 1 of the first 3 cakes that got the ol' dunk n' roll treatment. It has been 4 days since I have dunked them, but haven't seen a ton happening yet. I noticed some little white bumps popping up, but looks more like mycelium than pinning. Any tips or suggestions?

im not sure. I have the same thing where some are taking awhile to show any signs of pinning and others just pop em out off the bat like they don't give a fuck. Just make sure they arent too saturated with water or they wont pin fast. Alot of people have reported that and I'm seeing the improvement with the adjustment.
