Pretty sure I know the answer
    #26866745 - 08/06/20 03:56 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

These have been in the closet since 7-22. They look dry as hell. Corn and coffee. Inoculated with agar. I cracked them open and they don't really stink. They smell actually like peanuts. Are they any good?

I would toss. They look incredibly tainted. Also, I've heard and seen corn work and not work, but I've seen a lot more oats, rye, and WBS being used that works with higher success. Maybe give these grains a chance or refine your methods from start to finish. Sucks to see, but it's also a good learning experience to get better.

Toss. Sorry brother. It'll get better. Just make sure to make ONE change in your process so you can narrow down what caused this. Too many variables aren't good for scientific process.

Only good vibes but man I can't believe you sniffed those jars. I wouldn't have even opened those I'd toss the jar and all lol.

stop using coffee it does zero good and will only greatly increase your chances of garbage results. take this as a lesson learned and just drink it while your prepping your grain insteadπŸ‘

I pour liquid coffee in the soak water. Never coffee grounds.

Colonized invitro coffee presents little risk. It might make the media too hot if you used too much but anything colonized in a sterile environment is technically axenic. Using coffee grounds in a bulk grow as a part of the spawn run is risky because it’s exposed to air. I wouldn’t ever trust that. But some liquid coffee in the grain soak water is beneficial for colonization.

Good to know. I was having hit is miss colonization out of doing that. Mostly misses. I'll leave the coffee grains out and just make coffee for the soak.

Please continue to update this thread. I'm interested in how using coffee to soak in grain will turn out. Pastywhyte's method with using it to soak, but not in the jar directly make a lot of sense. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

IMO, once you crack them open, you either use them or toss them.

I've switched over to oats last week. I'll be doing another batch in a day or two and I'll use coffee to soak and see how that goes.

I used to use coffee for soak water 100% of the time. I stopped and noticed no difference.

I found that adding nutrients during the grain soak or boil seems to increase the vigor of the myc (i have used coffee and/or humic acid).

Adding them in to an open air environment like in the substrate or during spawning to bulk has always led to disaster for me, but when added in and pasteurized first works well.

I'll take pics next run to show the difference I am talking about. The nut soaked grains (oats usually for me) have a much more aggressive rhizo growth.

Just my experience and totally anecdotal.

I have used extracted green tea and plant fertilizer in coir with shoeboxes. Didn't contaminate, but I am not sure if it increased colonization and yield or not, but it may be so. Coffee I have read gets contaminated in the bulk sub.

I feel the "secret" is to load the nutrients up in the grains (and sterileized) before spawning to bulk.

You want the substrate to have very low nutrient value especially during the fragile first few weeks.

I feel this gives the myc the "head start" it needs on the contams.

No I don't think so. Grains are nutritious as is, it's the coir that doesn't have anything to feed the mycelium as it colonises, so I tried out some fertilizer and green tea. Did'nt hurt at least. Mind you, I was very careful to only give a tiny amount of fertilizer in there, so mold would not get all over it.

I still use coffee in my soak water as well. No problems from it as far as I can tell.
