Advice on my first tub?
    #26866091 - 08/06/20 09:40 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

It has been about 10 days since I started this tub using some of Bods teks. (agar—>Oats—> coir and unmodified tub). Lots of condensation on the sides of the tub and lid. I have been misting whenever i notice there aren’t many droplets visible on the mycelium. I was worried about how some areas look more matte and yellow rather than white and fluffy, but I’ve read other threads about that that say it’s fine. Hoping to find out if my first ever attempt is on the right track. It have it at 74F and lids are flipped for FAE.

Thanks a ton!

I'd tilt the lid a bit to introduce more FAE.
Moisture is enough.

Okay thanks! Is the yellowing due to insufficient FAE?

Also, what makes it better for a newbie such as myself to post in Cultivation? Just higher traffic or something? I had fine luck with previous posts to Getting Started and figured that was the place for newbie inquiries. Honest question!

There are many TC's on the mush cult board,
usually not on the getting started.
You may be lucky to get good answers there,
but on the mush cult are always experts and veterans.
As you set up a mono, you're not getting started anymore,
but you're into cultivation now.
Of course it's up to you, it was just an advice.

Can't see clearly on my fukken tablet right now,
but it should pin every time from now.

Ah gotcha! That makes sense. Just trying to learn the ropes here so I appreciate the advice(:

I am hoping I’ll feel less like a newb once I get a successful pin set, haha!

Ah shit man.

So, one lesson learned.
When you catch trich before a first flush,
your spawn was bad, as you just used coir for bulk. (Right?)
How did you inoculate by the way?

Yup, just coir. I cooked the coir (Boiling water into a large cooler for 12 hours) and checked it was at field capacity and cooled off before using it.

I cooked the oats, put those in my PC for 1.5 hours, let it cool. I put them in my SAB and took my agar plates and put them in the jars. Once those completely colonized I broke them up and mixed it with the cooked coir.

I didn’t realize what trich looked like before it becomes green and I’m guessing i had some on the plates? Thing is, I didn’t see any green or bright white areas in the jars like I do now in the bins. Was it hiding beneath the surface all along?

Also, should I only mist with distilled water? I feel dumb for not doing that now.

Yes, i guess it's from agar.
How many transfers did you make?

Next time, when your jars are
fully colonized, you may do the final shake,
and let the jars sit two more days.
If myc recovers, it should be safe.
Trich may hide inside, and waits to go to bulk.

Distilled water isn't needed,
tap water won't cause trich.

It was for sure the spawn.

Could be it wasn’t sterilized completely, the culture had contams hiding in it, or stuff got in while dropping wedges into the jar.

out of the house, pronto.

if you have a terrace, I had a tub like that, except it was on its 3rd flush, trich, immediatly placed it outside when i saw the white blob of trich

I put a generous amount of toothpaste over the trich, which slowed it down for several days, allowing a few extra fruits to mature
toothpaste fucks mold and bacteria, but more importantly, it dries out organic matter, just try putting it on acne or a flesh wound.

but that was only okay to do because it was outside where it doesnt matter how you pillage your done subs, and the trich was only supressed, it came out the sides again later, when i finally trashed it

not something u should spend time on either, rather make new spawn, because this one u made here was both bacterial and has trich, which means it never had a chance

clean spawn is the basics, and even people who fruit most of their jars, can still be doing stuff that makes their jars bacterial and less good

edit:

afaik u arent completely sterilizing coir either, with 2h pc cycle
so the more water fat your coir prep is, the worse this becomes
with "boil sterilization" or what was used here i think this must be even worse

im leaning towards your spawn being horrible, aka whatevr u mixed the coir with

I did three transfers but I wasn’t always confident that what my plates had was purely mycelium, so I wouldn’t be at all shocked if this all started from that.

I’ll try that waiting period between a final shake and spawn to bulk next time, thanks for the tip! I also am going to be more meticulous about cleanliness during the process. I think I did alright, but I could certainly be more careful anyhow.

Unfortunately it isn’t within my abilities to bury this anywhere at my residence currently... I sure wish though. I’ll take it outside to bag it up.

Should I be pressure cooking my coir somehow?  or is PCing my oats for a longer amount of time probably the solution?

1.

"I cooked the oats, put those in my PC for 1.5 hours, let it cool"

caught this, thats too short for oats,
could also be other problems with your pc technique

PC cycle

heat the pc
load jars into pc, jar lids loose
close the pc
open the vent fully
once vent reaches steam, let it do this for 10 minutes
put the vent/valve to 15 psi setting (Max usually)
wait for full steam from vent
set the timer to minimum 2 hours for oats
usually people reduce heat from full to less
maintain pressure for the time period
take it off
let pressure go out naturally

then either:

a) open and tighten jars while they are still pretty warm (me)

b) or just be very careful and close the lids when you open the PC after the jars have completely cooled

2.

post ur agar next time so people can see if it's clean

beautiful=usually clean

if you took bad agar to grains, thats the source.

3.

"Should I be pressure cooking my coir somehow?"

you can use coir in any state. many people cook it, som people pc it, some people cold soak it, bucket teck it.

cooked or pasteurized are both okay, its definitely not required to PC it

coir is used for its contam resist and its water, the truth about whether or not coir is nutricious or cube myc can "thrive" on it, is unknown to me.  colonizing coir gives very ropey growth to me , suggesting lack of nutes.

a TC could probably help with this

Oats are so easy and fast.

If your In a area where's there are horse you'll find a feed store that sells hay and oats... They're cheap...

For 10 myco quarts.

I start with 4 qt. oats and wash them with water and drain. 2 min. total..

I place the rinse oats in my 23 qt. presto and add 1-1/2 gallons of tap water.

Turn on flame, the hottest setting..

35 minutes later I start pulling a few oats out of the pot and cut them In two with a pair of scissors. If the grain Is white inside the cut area I boil longer until grain are no longer white.

I always save a 1000 ml. of grain water for my agar plates. Then drain the oats.

I have a rectangle wooden frame 3 by 4 foot with shade cloth attach to It. This Is for spreading the wet grain out thin for drying.
It normally takes 3 to 4 hours out in the sun and wind to dry the grain. (I do not like wet grain going into my jars.)

2 hour pc. cycle at 15 psi.

Grain water works great...

500 ml. grain water
10 grams agar
20 ml. to a plate will make 24 plates..
12 psi for 45 min.
lower temp. are easier on my pp5 plastic plates.

Not the best information.
I don`t like the idea of killing the good microbes in the coir with sterilization.
Bucket tek always works fine, and isn`t the cause for trich for sure.

Yeah, exactly that`s what i mean
With clean spawn, there`s no need to be paranoid with coir.
