How to use a hydrometer?

Hello dear people from shroomery! After a failed growkit my supplier sent out a new one, great news. Now I want to buy a hydrometer to maintain a better climate for my shrooms to grow.
If the hydrometer has like a stick, do you think I stick it in the bag or in the substrate.
If I have like a room meter so to speak, how does my room humidity relate to the bag humidity. Should I just get a feel for the growkit instead cause I don't really know how it works.
Thank you in advance I'll go water the kit now

You decided to buy a growkit, so you don`t know about the moisture content in general. Mostly they`re nearly drenched, but could be dry on the surface. So your meter says nearly 100%, what would you do then? If you handle your own stuff, you know about field capacity of your substrate, so you just have to check your surface. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23999053
These tools don`t do anything to this hobby, just your eyes are important.

You mist as much as it needs. You want to have that tiny droplets on the surface all the time until knots form.

hygrometers are pointless as stated all they will do is give u a general estimate to go by but you cant even trust that. to me its just more like a reference tool to monitor my fc to just get a general idea of how my shit is working. and its literally a 1$ plastic one from home depot. just like they said above your eyes and your brain are your tools that you use. what you need to do is calibrate those by searching and reading about surface conditions and looking at pictures that ppl have posted showing whats good and bad. the search engine is in the upper right corner just search for proper surface conditions and spend some time on it. you really have to put in the time reading in this hobby every grow is different cuz every environment is different so there is no way someone can tell u just do this. you need to know how to identify proper moisture, over saturation and dryness. also as stated you bought a kit. thats a big no no if you want to succeed. 9.999 times outta 10. they produce nothing but bacterial mold blocks. you already have no idea where you stand with your moisture within your sub or if it was prepared by a guy who was scratchin his balls while takin a shit 2 minutes before your kit came down the line. i wish you well but most likely this will only result in contamination and you will end up either making the same mistake twice and buyin another kit then giving up all together. or you will go out and get all the needed supplies to do it yourself and have many good grows. i hope you choose the diy route. happy reading😃👍

Thank you very much bro I'll go read into it. I regretted a growkit man but if this grow succeeds I wish to start making my own substrate and learn to make spore prints from mushrooms which I'll probably learn from this lovely forum. Thank you all for input I love you
